Ibanez S520EX
List: $680

The Ibanez S520EX bowed out of the catalogues in Dec 2002. In that year, the 520 was in its ‘EX’ incarnation which had the body covered in ‘leather’, an acquired taste to many, but a collectable quirkiness for the rest. A friend who bought the 2002 model is still wondering why that ‘skin’ peeled off over time if it was meant to be there as a functional laminate in the first place- pangs of regret… However, the S520 is back this year, devoid of visual gimmicks to say the least.

If this is your first encounter with the S-series, be informed that the body is dual curved (front & rear) to give maximum playing comfort, in addition to a very intriguing construction/ tone philosophy- the centre of the body should be the most massive because it’s the crucial, tone inducing portion. Genius stuff, this bit… Moving along, this year’s 520 isn’t very different from 2004, still dual humbucking & 22-fretted, but gone are the distasteful stretched, ‘M’ inlays. In fact, the fretboard is devoid of any markers, save for the ‘claw marks’ from the 11th till the 13th fret area. Any other visual references, then it’s on the bass side of the well-bound neck. The neck is my personal favourite- Wizard II profile, but it’s a little wider here (unlike the RG321's) & it made its difference felt.

Something new this year is the pair of Infinity covered humbuckers. They look like EMGs from afar but are totally passive. The covers here did wonders to tone IMO because if you’ve read my RG320 review, (RG320- uncovered Infinity pickups), you’ll know why they are near-dud units. Other physical attributes of this guitars are very impressive to say the least, absolutely no complaints. How does it sound like then?

Absolutely very pleasant. The 5-way pickup switching option ensures that you get at least a single coil replication in the neck humbucker, a copy of the RG321’s tonal palette for you. The covered Infinities have a very (Seymour Duncan) Alnico II Pro-like vibe to it, but the midrange remains markedly protrusive at high gain settings, especially from the bridge unit. I love them! Again, the Infinities, regardless of which guitar they are in, isn’t a sparkling clean tone proponent. But the tones on board are more than decent.

A little about the floating ZR bridge: Yes, it’s the epitome of a functional floating vibrato but it adds lots of weight to the whole guitar. The ZR has an incorporated trem-setter on board which means that 1.Your guitar returns to pitch all the time after a whammy abuse 2.It remains in neutral position even if it’s devoid of strings. A very intelligent system at the helm, would definitely stop your pathetic whining if you own a non-ZR equipped guitar & your tunings go off after you whammy. Get one already!!

The S520 makes a very pleasant re-entry into the catalogues this 2005. It’s the S-series to get if you’ve been hesitating all these while. I still find the ZR vibrato bridge a demerit to the whole guitar. Besides the weight issue, the ZR string saddles don’t sit parallel when the bridge is in neutral position, they are slightly inclined & they affect palm-placement comfort, unlike the Edge Pro/ II saddles which, by default, are parallel to the vibrato base. That aside, the S520 is a fantastic guitar for driven tones- rock/ fusion/ metal, you name it, definitely the guitar to get if you insist on return-to-pitch accuracy after a whammy encounter.

New Ibanez basses

the following Ibanez basses are new for 2005 @ Swee Lee. sorry no list price released yet...

BTB400

BTB1205
BTB1205ENTF.jpg

BTB1206
BTB1206ENTF.jpg

NOTE: This year's model sports maple/ walnut neck, a change from last year's whole maple + bubinga

SRX400
SRX400DSF.jpg

The first SRX to feature a lone humbucker, as oppossed to last year's dual humbucking models. Adaptation of the Sting Ray vibe maybe? definitely a direct competitor to the Ernie Ball SUB bass, this one IMO has a more resonant body- maple, but it's rather hefty... (2004's SRX300 & 500 both feature basswood bodies). Be prepared for a bright slap tone... 8)

Ibanez SZ2020
List: $2,000

The SZ2020 supersedes last year’s 1220 in many ways, I deem it a new guitar with an inherited resemblance rather than an upgrade per se. FYI, the 2020 is the first Prestige model to be made in Korea, many of us here would equate this move as a downgrade instead, hopefully, the following would make you a believer…

Please refer to Gear News 2004, for an in depth take on the 1220 as a reflection of the 2020. The differences offered are as follows:

• Pickups- the 2020 sports an impressive pair of Seymour Duncan IBZ (not to be confused with the Duncan Ibanez version on the SZ320), more on this later…
• The maple body cap is an ungraded offering
• Non-lacquered headstock, the 1220 offered a lacquered face
• Plastic machine heads
Mike Mushock 1 bridge + Gibraltar hard tail
• ‘Bubbles’ 12th fret marker, the 1220’s fretboard was devoid of indicators

This guitar weighs slightly more than the 1220 due to the more massive bridge assembly. the overall vibe of both guitars are similar (yes, I did re-audition the 1220 just to make sure) but the tone sets them apart. No physical complaints here, I expected none to begin with, otherwise, it’s not worthy of its Prestige tag.

The SD IBZ humbuckers here are worth their residence, absolutely charming. High gain settings would be their fodder anytime, crunchy drive would be equally attainable especially in the split mode, clean tones are easily the best but it isn’t as lush as Ibanez’s own Super 58 humbucker. Maybe the SD IBZ pair need a cover for that, speaking of which, the non-slotted pole-pieces of each humbucker are darkened, so from a distance, it gives the illusion that they are covered units- brilliant. BUT Yamaha had done that for its SG2000 model so it’s a borrowed idea so to speak…

Moving on to the contentious bridge here, the MM1 is partially accountable for the 2020’s lush tones. If you are new to this, the MM1 has a through-body anchor block which augments the body’s overall resonance. It helps to enhance the resonance because the strings are anchored to the Gibraltar tail end as opposed to the 1220’s string-through body option. It’s appaludable engineering really, but some of us dissent the MM association, but that’s another story…

My only grievance with the 2020 (like the 1220) is its tiny, stiff, pickup toggle switch. Also, the cream plastic tuners are acquired taste, they get stained fairly easily too, the fretboard stain on my fingers rubbed off easily on to them. Also, no hard case offered… bummer

It’s a very addictive guitar to play with, it kept me occupied for nearly an hour in the store. Snobs would insist on a Japanese Prestige instead of a Korean make but be assured that there’s no quality lapse on this incarnation- zilch. If you believe that there’s life beyond the Les Paul with regards to the set-neck construction, this 2020 would be a very rewarding guitar to own.

Seymour Duncan pickups in Ibanez 2005

i've received some info from Seymour Duncan on their pickups in some Ibanez models this year, notably the SZ series, thought i share it here 8)

2 variations thusfar
1. Duncan Ibanez (Korean)
2. Seymour Duncan IBZ (American)

both versions were modelled after SD's own Distortion(bridge) & '59(neck). after trying out the SZ320/ 2020, i heard the tonal replication & was impressed. these pickups are not available off-the-shelves, they are specially produced for the above-mentioned guitars. if you think that there shouldn't be a diff output combo in your guitar as it affects volume, be assured that the guitars i tried had the pickups complementing each other instead of being polar opposites.
