gauging of volume

when i jam...

how do i noe whether the volume i've fixed at is too loud how too soft?

Is there any way to judge?

i suppose since you're standing in front of your amp, you should be able to hear the other instruments with your bass sounding louder but not till the point that you can't hear anyone else clearly.

it's easier when you're gigging since there's monitors so you just listen to it. plus the sound engineer will tell you when you've gone a bit too loud.

my drummer told me i should be as loud as the snare..any truth on that?

DEEEEPPEEEENDDS on how they tune the snare .. alot of drummers have different strength ... if you are as "loud" as a drummer who's quite weak then you have a problem already ..

turn it up until someone starts complaining .. =) .. hahah .. but i tend to turn to a volume where it's comfortable for me .. loud but i still can hear the rest of the musicians .. =)

i always turn myself up till i can hear myself but people always tell me i'm not loud enought or they can't hear me at all..

Gauging of volume

Heheh i agree with these guys. Make sure you can hear yourself, but not to the point of not hearing the rest of the musicians especially the lead and harmonic instruments. If you are only able to hear the drums and youself then you will have a problem.

Stand in front of the drummer with the guitar amps behind you.....should be able to hear what you play in time with the kick drum.....that what i do at Fourtones coz they have a yummy bass rig...Hartke....

for me,stand away far2 from your amp,go to every places in the jamming room, whether you can hear your bass,no need to be loud, just need to be present but not boomy, then try to adjust the volume if you cant hear yourself

when you jam, always find a jamming studio with a balanced sound. balanced sound=each instrument has more or less the same volume in the overall mix no matter where you stand in the room.

it makes you feel better, helps the band flow, and everyone feels good afterwards.

if you're in a studio which isnt really balanced. then stand further from your amp. and ya, dont go to that studio again.

It's not impossible to get a balanced sound, but it's easier to get your vocalist/friend who's not playing to judge from a non-biased point of view. What some musicians lack is the ability to listen to what others are playing, and at the same time focus on their instrument.

i think my problem is the opposite.

i cant hear myself when im playing, even when my guitarists tune their volume down.
sometimes i had to kneel in front of bass amps to hear myself. :(
the drums might be too loud . im not sure
help pls

or maybe your ears dont take low freqs that well... woah wait. does that even happen?

might be possible, by anyway theres some talk abt rearrangement of amps or stand at a different position in the threads above...

guess i gotta move around eh, but the amps cable at beat merchants r short !~ :(

I would always make sure my bass sound is in the middle of lead and rythem guitar. Lead will be the loudest followed by bass and then rythem.

the drummer in my band follows my rhythm most of the time. as long as it is loud enough for him to hear, and loud enough for me to monitor, then it is loud enough.

too loud is when the wee lee ahpek appear outside the room in the window asking me to lower volume. whats his problem man
