Fretless Guitar?

Hi guys!

Stumbled upon this very interesting site about fretless guitars (http://www.unfretted.com/) and gotta admit, I'm kinda inspired to try my hand at this, ie, getting a beat-up cheapo guitar and try turning it into a fretless...

Has anybody here tried making/playing a fretless guitar before? What was your experience like? If so, any advice? If you have one, any chance (if it's possible) for me to try it out to get a feel of it?

Yours in music,

Haha, I refretted my fretless guitar and sold it :) I prefer fretless bass. Fretless guitar has less sustain and more mellow in tone, thats probably why builders like Vigier have steel and glass fingerboards to make up for lost clarity and brilliance in tone.

other than the novelty of it, do you really want a fretless?

To get good sustain, raise the bridge...alot! especially for a fretless.

Basically, to play a fretless, there's not much difference, except u need to get used to the "feel". Fretting....barr chords...all feels 'funny' because u cannot press jus above the fret but ON the fret now. Hence, its not so easy as you can very easily play off pitch.

I won't advice to "remove" ur guitar frets to make a fretless guitar, coz the fret grooves will seriously affect ur sound, plus, you may have to memorize the fret positions....unless u are able to make some markers.

If you play the violin, the fretless will be an easy switch.

Then again...why would u need a fretlass for?

Possibly, if one is adventurous and creative enough to use it to make good music, like Vai playing "I Know You're Here" =p
