Flat...

Here's my biggest problem:

At jamming sessions, i'm able to sing at the correct pitch. But, what i notice is that during my performances with my band, i have the tendency to go flat. i'll start flat and end up going flat ALL the way, thinking that i got my pitch right. this sucks. i'll only realise that i'm flat when i watch the video of our performance.

the thing is, during the performance, not many others notice that i'm flat either. but still, i'm not gonna ignore this problem of mine.

what can i do? i've got a major gig coming up, and i'd really like to find a solution to this problem. thanks alot.

some ideas for you - invest in personal ear monitors. there are brands like shure or samson out there, google for more options/research.

a cheaper solution is to use a single ear-plug on, its like closing 1 ear to hear yourself better. 1 thing is NOT too strain your voice when onstage, pace your stamina like how you pull it off in the studio. i personally recommend regular swimming to any vox that wants to build stamina, esp if you're hyper onstage.

You probably can't hear yourself clearly on stage, which is why in a smaller room like the Jam studio, you're fine. You could invest in ear monitors like what Paulo said or check whether the venue has proper monitors before the gig. Of course, it would help if you could do a sound check and get the sound engineer to tweak your vocals. Over and above, constant exposure to many gigs would probably help you get used to different surroundings. Good luck. :D

skink83's rite. its reli all bout the exposure i think. one way of practising which i've personally tried and worked is singing along to ur ipod with the volume real high. The downside is spoiling ur ears..:P but u'll reli get to practise singing without hearing urself n even learning how to enjoy it. Of course..get someone to check out if ur singing in key during that time..haha

turn on ur mp3 player real loud, and sing, get someone to hear you. that way you'll know how to control your voice better and if you do it well, you'll still sing on pitch though you can't hear yourself. practice :D
