hi, i'm very keen on getting a firewire mixer since they are able to send many many channels to the computer individually for recording... and being a beginner, i think such a device would suit me?

I've looked up some firewire mixers from Alesis, Mackie, Phonic and a new one from M-Audio and concluded myself that..

1. Mackie and M-Audio are out of my budget.
2. Alesis Multimix 8 for $695 at Sinamex is quite steep.. and..
3. Phonic <-- where to find??

also, anybody knows where got sell Alesis Multimix 12 ??

really liked to have some advice. I'm lost. haha

thanks people!

Try Luthermusic at Excelsiors

For firewire mixer, i think it should be above 1k.
If you are doing home recording, I don't think you need firewire, unless you want to send all the tracks at the same time to your PC.

Good luck!

coldestream, you try to read up more on firewired mixers. coz it might not do what you want to do.

from what i know, say if it has 16 inputs, you will still be able to send a stereo L/R to the computer for recording. this means simultanously, it can record only 2 discreet tracks.

say if you mic up a drumset with 8 microhpnes all going into the mixer, the output to the computer for recording will only be a stereo mixdown of all 8 mics as oppose to 8 individual tracks.

ha..ha.. today my mind is not functioning too good due to too much work. hope the explaining did not confuse you.

Was told that firewire can handle that many channels (all 8 channels individually) but USB cannot as USB can only have stereo..

Then again, i realised firewire mixers are a lot more expensive than normal mixers. So if i'd just use a normal mixer to mix my mics and instrument line-ins together, then i'll stereo output to a soundcard, I can only record the stereo mix-down right? moreover, i can't add individual effects to each instruments already(unless i get a hardware effects processor)?

really appreciate your kind advices! thanks!

coldestream, sorry i misread your first post. i thought you were asking about usb mixer.

firewire mixer should be able do to more discreet channel recording. what is your budget?

does $600 for a firewire mixer sound ridiculous?

I'm currently bidding on ebay for the Alesis Multimix 12 Firewire..

At US$305.00 plus US$55.00 for shipping, it'll be US$360.00

360 x 1.556 = SGD 560.12

It will be nice if i win this bid (a few hours left now..) but i doubt so. haha

My alternative would be settling for a normal mixer, then i'll use a four-input soundcard interface.. so that i'll have stereo-ins from mixer for the instruments and two mics for vocals. Might have to deal with that..

what do you think?
