Hello sports fans .... here's my latest project / whacking / studio practise etc guitar.
After the recent sale of my Hamer "Skull" axe - I picked this baby up (2nd hand) at Dans Music. It's basically a mid range superstrat.
Dark red stain / gloss finish over flame maple body. The neck is a 24 medium jumbo fret (with deep cutaway for easy upper fret access) rosewood on maple neck.
The humbuckers & sgl coil pups are stock. I normally change pups when doing up a 2nd hand axe but after major testing of the pups for sonic capabilities, squeeling, huming factors and of course tone & power - I discovered these stock pups were quite good. The 2 humbuckers have a nice vintagey "paf" kinda tone (perfect for the retro stuff I normally play). It originally came with a 5 way switch. I modded it by installing a new 3 way switch to have the humbuckers on (either neck/both together or bridge). I added a 3 way on/on/on mini toggle switch so I can either have additional options (toogle up - Humber mode controlled by 3 way selector / toggle mid - both humbuckers and sgl coil in what ever mode I want / toggle down - sgl coil ONLY - for the clean , really stratty sounds). This means I have now made it a 7 way instead of 5 way tone selecting axe. I could have even further split the humbuckers (they were 5 wire types capable of coil tapping) but I want the full humbucker tone so I left them as wired in full humbucker mode.
The bridge is pretty good too - thickish baseplate and precise 2 point screws. I added a pop in tremolo arm for ease ( I normally dont use tremolo but in the event a song calls for it, I can easily press fit in /out the trem arm). I replaced the original saddles with a set of the new fangled locking saddles. These saddles are chromed brass - with a tiny allen screw in each saddle to individually lock each string - making staying in tune after dive bombing much better!
The headstock was actually black & slightly oddly shaped. I sanded off the black headstock face - left it blank and reshaped the profile of the headstock for a more conventional superstat look. The nut is a graphite which when combined with the locking saddles yields excellent tuning stability.
Tuners were replaced with Gotohs - a midprice but excellent choice of modern tuners.
Gig field report on this axe to follow.
Cheerz & thanks for reading!
