Hey guys, this guitar listed for 12,000USD. Ownder said it is 100% true blue pre cbs 1962 strat. This is what the owner said about the guitar.

"This is a very nice early 1962 slab board stratocaster. It plays and sounds fantastic. It's a few flakes of paint away from being vintage mint. The original owner bought this guitar brand new in early 1962, played it for a couple of years with flatwound strings, then put it under the bed. I bought it from him. There is light wear on the cowboy chord frets, and that is as bad as the fret wear gets - all the frets are very clean, original, and have years of life in them. The neck heel has a pencil date of 12/61 and the headstock has 2 patent numbers which is correct for a 12/61. In 1962 they added another patent number to the headstock and started using stamps on the neck heel instead of pencil around April. This is the earlier 2 patent number headstock with pencil neck date. The pot codes are visible in the photos below and are all from 1961. The solder and wiring is all in tact and in excellent original condition. The pickup winding wire is shown below - the overall condition of the electronics is excellent. The neck plate "halo" matches the paint halo on the body. There have been no oversprays or touchups. The pickguard has some typical wear by the truss rod screw but is otherwise very clean and is a nice evenly colored mint green. The volume and tone controls are smooth and work as they should without scratchiness or drop outs. The bridge is very clean and all the allen screws work well and allow for nice setup and intonation. The original 5 tremelo springs are there. The neck is medium shaped, not a big one, but not tiny. The slab rosewood fretboard is in excellent condition and the clay dots are also excellent. The original ashtray bridge cover and tremelo bar are in excellent shape and are shown in the pics below. The guitar is a wonderful player, the action is low and without buzz, the intonation is good, the pickups sound great."

Tell me what you guys think about it and whether I shd jump on this deal. Thanks!

imho, you might be able to actually build a guitar almost to those specs with probably half of his asking price, with everything you want in it.

but if it floats your boat, by all means get it.

but personally, i'd build.

You can't get the age by building (unless you build it out of different vintage strats but thats another story), so if you like it/find it's worth it, why not?

Before you guys buy a USD$12000, I like to pose you one question. If one fine day for whatever reason, you decide to sell the guitar away, can you find a buyer and atleast get back the USD$12000 you invested?

Trust me, its not as easy as you think. Furthermore, if you can find buyers, it would likely be Americans or Europeans who know about the history of the guitar. You think they would do a wire transfer of fund amounting to USD$12000 across the globe just to get the guitar? I know I wouldnt because it is so risky....

Nobody say it is easy; these are not the stuffs that people buy every day when they pass by music store. Collectors search the guitars worldwide and bank wire transfer is not only an option that you can have.

If i had 12k, i wld get it... Cuz the value will go up for sure! But need to make sure the guitar is totally stock, that measn even the tone pots must be stock!!! Basically, its best to have it all stock except the strings...

Condition is ok, considering its so old from the 60s. There r many more 60s ones thats worth more actually

i couldnt agree more about that statement, but what i said was you can build one to specs close to that, the vintage feel, wear and tear are a different issue.

when it comes to vintage strats, its best that you do a reality check first.

an original 1962 Fender Stratocaster in Sunburst finish should be worth AT LEAST $25k USD. we are not talking about custom colours as they are double the price. heck, I'm not even taking Eddie Vega's prices as reference.

the single line klusons seem to be original. nail holes present. paint seems to be original. the neck plate should date around 62 ( since I assume the serial number is 72+++ )

62 strats have 3 patent numbers: 2,573,254 , 2,741,146 & 2,960,900. 2 possibilities. this is definitely a 61 neck. the electronics are all dated 61. fair enough. the body is definitely 62 ( can tell by the worm route ).

either its a super early 62 fitted with a 61 neck

or

its a 61 neck fitted onto a 62 body.

Fender made quite a few mistakes in the past. so this might just be one of them.

I'm not trying to sound rude but dont be naive. the price in this case is the dodgiest issue. its like someone who wants to sell China to you by taking pictures of China and offering you a quote. how trustable is this seller is your biggest obstacle. after all, at least you should know by now that the strat in the pictures is more or less original.
