Fresh from following the American Idol series and totally thrilled with Bo Bice (and his long hair) , my 6 year old son asked me "Daddy, are there girl rock stars?"

I answered "Yes. There are girls who sing rock songs."

He asked again "Like Rock A Bye Baby?"

That is when I realised he hasn't grasp the concept of "Rock".

ooh, that's cute...

but fear not! He will soon be introduced to the dark side of music
ok, I'm not goning to scare you anymore.

Does he play anything? Going to teach him guitar? drums? keyboard? bass?
oh, of course...he can be a young vocalist and sing "rock a bye baby"...the rock version of course :P

Rock or Metal

Seriously, how do u define rock & metal?

I used to tink dat Metallica is metal, but people told me its rock?

Is rock the good side & metal the dark side? I'm kinda confused here.

Hmm... i'll see rock&metal to be the harder edge, in-your-face, kinda music. Maybe as a result, it's suited for angst. I can call any dark minor-ish music with melancholy lyrics the dark side of music...

Whats the difference

So whats the diff b/w Rock & Metal?

Is it a question of the degree of Intensity?

I think that old school met is metal. i'm talking pre '92 and load and reload are rock, or hard rock at least.

I see rock as a really wide kind of term.
You can't really call a certain kind of music as rock ..it's really general and if someone comes and tell me XXX plays rock music I'll go ' what rock? metal ? punk ? alternative ? pop ? soft ? '

metal I guess is one of the many sub-genres of rock. It's really a lot 'harsher' [ I can't think of any other words to use] in terms of lyrics and a lot 'noisier' in terms of the music.

yea..that's what I think.
metal is seriously too noisy for me.

Diversity

I realised that there is a vast diversity in perspectives of diff people todae.. wat sounds Metal to 1, may sound Rock to the others. Metal & Rock is quite similar except for certain components e.g. Metal - heavy chord thrashing, heavy shredding, Rock - lighter melodic chords, melodic solos.

However, nowadays, practically most of the solos consist of strong melodies as well as heavy shredding, so its very difficult to determine whether the genre of the song itself is Rock or Metal.

Well, rock and metal.. just think of it in extremes lah.
AC/DC = Confirm Rock.
Pantera = Confirm Metal

in between, just call it hard rock. hahahahahahah

Erm

wat about Metallica? Iron Maiden? Slayer? Black Label Society?

Their music almost sound e same, but surprisingly they're in diff genre of music?!? *confused*
