FEELing the guitar

hello,

i am new too guitar, only got in touch with the guitar like for a year, i know what notes are what notes, chords, etc etc. Wanna ask how do u FEEL your guitar?

my FEEL means that being one with your instrument. Meaning when u think of a note, or a melody, how do your fingers 'automatically' moves to that certain fret certain string.

For piano which i have been playing for years, this is pretty easy as key are alighted from lowest to highest note with no repitions of note. The FEEL can be trained with a distance and touch way.

however for guitar, with the alternate strings especially, i could not find a clear idea to develope this FEEL

hope for some enlightenment, thanks

thanks shred cow,, but how? i need the enlightenment.

I had played tabs for like half a year, and i find that tabs playing is pretty crappy, its merely memorising the patterns on the guitar and repearting them with sheer memorisation, i dun even know what i am playing.

what i wish to achieve is not great speed or techniques, its just a FEEL of what i am playing byable to play what i have in my mind : )

thanks again : )

if thats the case, ill leave mr vai to explain how he feels the guitar thru these series of online lessons =)

basically, i just have to get into the "mood" to feel my guitar. meditating on a certain melody or some noise in your head can sometimes drive your fingers itching to play 'em on the guitar. its totally natural, as you will see with plenty of meditation and practice.

cheers ;)

well. The correct tab is one that has a score notation with it...

If you wish to explore the guitar more, then it would be good to be able to identify the notes on the fretboard.

Just like how in piano, you memorise with this C is... where F# is, its the same for the guitar.

If you wish to play whats in your mind... its a long hard journey. I wouldn't think its meditating. You don't sit there in silence and plonk, you get a melody that you can immediately play out on your guitar. Mr Vai's articles focus on the compositional/improvisational aspect of playing.

To be able to play whats in your mind, you gotta practice. On piano, can you hum and then play that melody out? How did you get there? Dissect it. Its the same concept.

- Familiarity with instrument
- A good ear

Thats what you need. If you have perfect pitch like some of my friends who upon picking up a guitar for the 1st time, can play some thing on it, then fine its good, the world's all peachy and black & white for you. :D If you don't then... hehehe...

You can implement the aural training you do on piano, to guitar.

Well to me feel is all about control. Whether is it musically or technically, knowing when, where and how to execute your playing throughout different parts of the song.

thats for the steve vai article!! Definitely will need it in the future when i get better

thats for all the advice guys! i think i am enlightened a bit, one of the cruticial point should be scales. One key diff between piano and guitar is the guitar have repeat notes, unless that piano one note only appear once. Need to get use of this : )

i think i need to change my thinking when i play a song, whether its lick, solo, strum or anything. In my mind i should feel the tones, sound of it, and relate my palyingm instead of just memorising the partern on the fretboard in which how the tune is played.

P.S May i ask where can i learn play by ear guitar?
