Barcelona day one - Ferrari head Honda in Spain

Barcelona day one - Ferrari head Honda in SpainFerrari’s Felipe Massa set the Monday pace at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya at the start of a four-day test session. Second to Massa in the timesheets was the Honda of Alexander Wurz, followed by McLaren’s Pedro de la Rosa.

A total of nine teams were in action, each fielding a single car, with the majority evaluating new components and aero packages ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix later this month. Weather conditions were fine and dry apart from some rain during the final hour.

Massa’s best time - over two seconds quicker than Wurz’s - was set on slick tyres, which Bridgestone are evaluating this week ahead of their possible return next season. The Brazilian’s programme also included testing new aerodynamic components for the forthcoming Barcelona race. He will continue in the F2008 on Tuesday.

Wurz filled the second slot for Honda after a busy day testing Bridgestone’s 2009 tyres. The Austrian covered 75 laps during the day but will hand over the RA108 to Rubens Barrichello on Tuesday. Fellow tester De la Rosa, meanwhile, was third for McLaren. The Spaniard, who covered 103 laps, will be replaced by Lewis Hamilton for the second day of the test.

Nick Heidfeld was fourth fastest for BMW Sauber as he worked on the F1.08’s aerodynamic set-up. Heidfeld also found time to evaluate different engine mappings for the forthcoming Spanish Grand Prix and completed 105 laps. The German driver will continue to test on Tuesday before team mate Robert Kubica steps in on Wednesday.

Nelson Piquet was fifth quickest after covering 91 laps for Renault. Alongside general set-up work, Piquet spent the day evaluating several upgrades to the R28. He will hand over to team mate Fernando Alonso on Tuesday.

Unofficial Monday times from Barcelona:
1. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 1:18.613
2. Alexander Wurz, Honda, 1:21.059
3. Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren, 1:21.566
4. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 1:21.679
5. Nelson Piquet, Renault, 1:21.913
6. David Coulthard, Red Bull, 1:22.193
7. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams, 1:22.431
8. Timo Glock, Toyota, 1:22.590
9. Vitantonio Liuzzi, Force India, 1:22.846

My View - This season im seeing surprisingly new contender from the previous Ferrari Vs Renault Vs Mclaren...BMW is becoming more strong this season, cant wait for them to reach this shore, but i still prefer the Sepang atmosphere

If u really follow through Rossi like me, is always his bike, is always the disadvantages
when on a straight line and also his tyre......hiyo

well his bike seems to look puny when running in a straight line as he can be easily outrun by ducati and honda.

but its in the cornering that he wins the other manufacturers.

oh well he already is a great/living-legend.

FYI, the reason he can outrun in cornering is becoz of his experience, coz cornering involve braking and also change of gear, tats wat his gd at.....anw i can see abit improvement on the bike power now but his tyre still need improvement

Bartholemy: `No contact between Kawasaki and Valentino Rossi'

Kawasaki´s Competition Manager Michael Bartholemy has cleared up press speculation that the MotoGP team had approached Fiat Yamaha´s Valentino Rossi for a 2009 ride, stating that –although the team would be open to adding the Italian to their ranks- no such discussions have taken place between the two parties.

Speaking to motogp.com over the bwin.com Grande Premio de Portugal weekend, following rumours about links between `Team Green´ and the five-time MotoGP World Champion, Bartholemy stated: `There was a story in an Italian magazine recently after a journalist came to me and asked me if we have any interest in Valentino.´

`I said we would have to be stupid not to be interested because he is the rider in the World Championship,´ continued Bartholemy. `But we have never spoken to him and there is no contact between Kawasaki and Valentino Rossi.´

When quizzed about Kawasaki´s long term recruitment plans, Bartholemy responded, `We look for riders who can get results. That´s the most important thing, we are involved in MotoGP to get results, so we are looking for somebody for our future.´

Kawasaki currently run riders John Hopkins and Anthony West in the premier class, with the former´s fifth place in Sunday´s race the best result for the team so far in 2008.

My View - Rossi should re-consider a bike change, coz i miss the domination that he use to possess

Anybody going for Singapore F1?

I'm going with my keyboardist. Unfortunately, can only afford to be at Bay Grandstand (got big screen TV, can see other action along the track). Really wanted the Raffles Grandstand, cuz there are 2 sharp turns facing each other there; but those tix are $698 each lor :(

i was thinking to go but already spend my money at Sepang where me and my dad never miss since last 4 Years...and is cheaper there anw...hehehe

Haha! Next year Sepang also night race, not as hot. For Spore F1, I heard that some fans are staying in hotel in Batam and taking the 45-min boat ride in. That is hardcore! ;)

Singapore to use electronic flag displays

Singapore to use electronic flag displays As well as making history as Formula One racing’s first-ever night race, the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix will also mark the introduction of electronic flag displays to the sport. The new technology, developed by lighting consultants Valerio Maioli S.p.A for the Singapore event, will be used in conjunction with the traditional flag signals waved by marshals.

The innovative system, which meets the FIA’s stringent requirements, is the result of more than a decade of development at the Barcelona, Imola and Monza racing circuits. Similar to units used to guide pilots at the runways of major airports, these ‘DigiFlags’ will convey the different flag colours in a more visible way during the night race.

Thirty five display panels will be situated around the Singapore track, each controlled by handheld panels operated by officials at each marshals’ post. In addition to improved visibility, the new system will also provide the race director with an overview of every flag display around the circuit, thereby ensuring the more efficient communication of warnings.

With less than six months to go before the inaugural Singapore event takes place on September 28, the race organisers have been hard work preparing the new street circuit. A week-long demonstration of the lighting system was held from March 29, with a 64-metre stretch lit up with 16 projectors, ahead of its complete installation in August.

My View - Please do not cock up, will be embarrassing if something goes wrong

MotorGP News : Champion Stoner looking for solution to pace problems

After Casey Stoner qualified on the third row for the second Grand Prix in succession on Saturday the World Champion told motogp.com that his Ducati Marlboro team are struggling to understand why he is off the pace in Portugal.

Having qualified seventh and finished the race 11th in Jerez, his worst result for Ducati, Stoner finished with a ninth place grid spot at Estoril on Saturday and has been unable to match even his own pace from the 2007 visit to the Portuguese circuit in September - when he took third place in the race.

`We expected to be a bit more competitive,´ said Stoner, `especially since sixth months ago here we were a lot faster, so we can´t figure out why we are struggling. We´re a second and a half off the pace so we really need to pick something up before the race.´

On the final opportunity to make improvements on Sunday morning and Ducati´s wider problems which have seen all their riders aside from Stoner qualify close to the back of the grid, `The warm-up will be our last chance. We found three tenths of a second this afternoon but it is still nowhere near enough. It´s not just me, the other Ducati riders are having the same issues, so we have to figure it out for all of us.´

My View - hope he dont be 1 hit wonder, and he have a freaking hot wife...hehehe

Raikkonen victorious in dramatic Spanish Grand Prix

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen became the eighth consecutive man to win the Spanish Grand Prix from pole position, when he dominated Sunday's race at the Circuit de Catalunya.

The Finn shrugged off two safety car periods - the second when compatriot Heikki Kovalainen crashed his McLaren heavily after a front-end failure pitched him off the road in Turn Nine at an estimated 180 mph - and led home team mate Felipe Massa, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica. They finished 3.2s, 0.9s, and 1.5s apart respectively.

It may not have been a classic race, but it increased Raikkonen's championship score to 29 points and his lead to nine over Hamilton (20), while Massa jumps up to fourth on 18, one behind Kubica (19).

The Kovalainen incident occurred on the 22nd lap, possibly as a result of something causing the front-left tyre and rim to separate. It took a while to stabilise the Finn at the accident scene, but he gave a thumbs up as he was taken by stretcher to the medical centre. Later he was flown to hospital for precautionary checks, and his condition was described as stable.

The incident ruined Nick Heidfeld's race for BMW Sauber, since he was on a longer refuelling strategy and had just taken the lead after the first round of pit stops. He had to come in when the pit lane was still closed, and thus had to serve a stop-go penalty later on. That dropped him to a ninth-place finish.

Mark Webber brought his Red Bull home fifth ahead of Jenson Button's Honda, Kazuki Nakajima's Williams and Jarno Trulli's Toyota. The Italian was hampered by a long second stop and an unecessary third one after a communications mix up.

Giancarlo Fisichella was unable to resist the charging Heidfeld, so brought his Force India home 10th, ahead of Toyota's Timo Glock, who delayed himself running into the rear of David Coulthard. The Scot's left-rear tyre was cut as a result, so he also dropped back but managed to repass Super Aguri's Takuma Sato before the finish to claim 12th.

William's Nico Rosberg was headed for seventh place until his Toyota engine broke; Renault's Fernando Alonso was running fifth when his engine also blew up; Honda's Rubens Barrichello had a collision in the pit lane with Fisichella, which led to his subsequent retirement, and a clash on the opening lap also accounted for Force India's Adrian Sutil and, yet again, Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel. Team mate Sebastien Bourdais retired after being clobbered by Renault's Nelson Piquet as the Brazilian attempted to overtake. Piquet also failed to finish as a result. Finally, Super Aguri's Anthony Davidson went out with mechanical problems.

My View - Alonso, although have to retire from the race, seems cool and sportsmanship towards the home crowd and the crowd gave him the standing ovation..hope Kovalainen never suffer any serious injuries after having and accident...
