Explosion during night

i reside at marine parade area. 2 nights ago whilst sleeping i heard a big explosion as loud as thunder. my wife and I awoken because it was so loud. i think its not a thunder because it was not followed with another. this is not the first time it happened. any of you guys heard it or have an explanation..? just curious

ON a related note/tone/feel/vibe/slide, I often hear gunshots late at night - ridicuously loud ones too. But my psychiatrist says that it's probably the sound of whips.
