Enforcing Strict Rules

Maybe I'm posting in the wrong section, but instead of a suggestion, this is more of a coffeetalk-whine session.

I think SOFT has become to a very, uptight and unfriendly environment. Instead of enforcing sarcasm and harsh comments regarding "spoonfed" issues, I suggest we have a sticky on, GOOGLE before coming to SOFT.COM.SG

Since afterall, this is forum. People talk, interact, ask, answer, and get information. If instead of producing constructive comments or information, one gives or indirectly, "lectures" a person to start moving his butt to see the world; I suppose the community is pretty screwed IMHO.

Of course, don't treat me as a troll. I am just taken aback at what type of answer I am getting even before enquiring if one has done his own research. I guess, stereotype or what ah? Halo effect or something; tsk so tough for me to understand, will never stop. Must google I suppose.

Regards,
P

Of cos not, I'm the forum troll down here. No...my advise is that soft should just divert its url to either google or wikipedia. then all those who keep asking other people to wiki or google would be happy since they dont seem to want to build a community...

~meh~

That sounds like a good plan.

Now what was the meta refresh code again...?

-Googles...... 10 seconds more to answer-

<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="1;url=http://google.com.sg"> There.

Yeah, hurt so bad :(

Indeed, google is such a good buddy to have. Let's close down this forum maybe?

Post your information about music-related things in your own domain, have a build-in comments board. Anyone who wants information, search google for our local buddies; be it for gig information, gear related questions, buy and sell. I think google will be able to help.

Oh, yeah, point is close this site down I guess. Saves up SOFT's moolah anyway.

Cheers!

Haha! Redirect to Google.. That's darn funny lah! But come on Poolo! Let's not be so extreme as to suggest SOFT be closed down! Though I understand where you're coming from. Sometimes, the environment here doesn't feel so welcoming. I've been visiting this site for a few years now and IMO it was kinda friendlier last time.

But I understand the pain of some of the Orang Lama here. They get people coming in asking the same questions. So it gets on their nerves sometimes. I mean not all of us have the patience to suffer questions like 'what is the best guitar for a beginner' being asked at a rate of once every three days.(Ok, I didn't Googled this up or anything. Just a random stab.)

I think one thing the Mods could possible do is sticky a thread that says "Recommended Guitars for Beginners" or "Recommended Bass for Beginners". Then why don't those with vast experience points share their recommendations and that's it then? Can put these under one section with a QuickLink too. How's that? =)

There has been improvements, no doubt.

I am not doubting the site's ability. There are threads to help people, and I understand the irritance of asking questions which is 'unanswer-able'. Problem is, it is time not to 'stereotype' and start opening your eyes or brains; no offence, to see and learn better.

At least on some occasions, instead of giving one sided comments with almost a 100% assurance that "This guy is here to leech and he has not done his own research" issue, I suggest one should post with a more open heart and give some benefit of doubt.

No doubt, I sound a little whiney and b*chy as it has happened to me but, this truly reflects how much SOFT community is like; the main if not, only music forum in SOFT.

If you don't wish to share your 2cents worth, or think this guy is purely wasting your time, I suggest you should look else where and don't waste bandwidth.

Funny how this world works, you see me weird, I see you weird. Who is truly wasting bandwidth? ;)

That is why SOFT came up with the Rookie section. If you're asking a newbie question, I think that's the best place to post. It's a "safe haven" for beginners, away from some of these arrogant "old birds" who will snap at people for posting basic and commonly asked questions.

But sometimes the beginners still got flamed, even in Rookie section, by smart-alecs who think they know everything. Sad indeed.

alamak...

>><arrogant "old birds">><<

dun say like tat la... almost every1 i noe here from old birds to new birds to kuku birds are mostly nice people

Hell yes, I do so really want to post a sticky up like that. Or at least "Search the forum before asking questions". That's what the search function is there for.

Poolo, I did a quick look at your recently created threads. Stuff you have asked about is not really new and mostly can be found on the google or a search on the forums. Take your thread about pedal setup which I just responded in before seeing this thread. To prove my point, I did a search on google on "pedal setup" and boom! Search result number 8 on the first page ... DIAGRAMS! By dave hunter! And I paid bloody $70 for that book *grumble*

Since afterall, this is forum. People talk, interact, ask, answer, and get information. If instead of producing constructive comments or information, one gives or indirectly, "lectures" a person to start moving his butt to see the world; I suppose the community is pretty screwed IMHO.

Point is, all sorts of "constructive comments and information" has already been posted before by soft members and found on the myraid guitar information sites out there. Yes the community is pretty screwed when the older members start getting jaded about repeating answers for the upteenth time and stop posting constructively altogether. And it be screwed further if this "spoonfeeding" mentality continues to fester.

Of course, don't treat me as a troll. I am just taken aback at what type of answer I am getting even before enquiring if one has done his own research. I guess, stereotype or what ah? Halo effect or something; tsk so tough for me to understand, will never stop. Must google I suppose.

I'm very glad you posted up this thread, SRSLY. It serves as a very good example of what happens when people don't bother doing some basic research. The helpful become frustrated and eventually ambivalent. I'm sorry you had to bear some of the fallout from that but at least others can see and avoid such unpleasantness.

Amazingly, there is a similar discussion going on here: http://soft.com.sg/forum/gear-guitar/59850-trends-gear-all-you-lemmings.html

The fun never ends!

I actually think it takes 2 hands to clap.

Sure, there will ALWAYS be the "condescending-arrogant old birds" and the "leeching-lazy noobs-newbies" (some argue that each species of the abovementioned actually gave rise to the other, A causes B, B causes A, chicken-and-egg, u get the drift) but tt's part n parcel of an online community, just like forums/clubs everywhere else on this wide vast internet ain't it ?

For the most part, I do feel most of the people who use this forum are nice. I'm quite sure that just as much as most of us take away from here (i actually found my drummer for my band on this forum 2 years ago), we try and give back in 1 way or another

i also think so long as the pros (learning stuff, friendship, camaradarie) outweigh the cons (flamming, ripped off at classifieds), then the existence and growth of this forum should continue to be encouraged...

Just my 2 cents.

Avon: I understand where you are coming from, but some of us here are missing out my point.

The point is, discuss, get feedbacks. It isn't about getting a solid answer or a sure-proof answer. (Which in some cases, A = A.)

Somethings, if meant to be said A = A, there isn't a need for discussion forum. Similarly, if other forums are offering similar "services or information", then why do we even need to come SOFT?

It was never about finding a good answer or being spoonfed. It is about coffeeshop-talk virtually and wanking on your fingers; like right now. And being able to 'led' to surprises where you'll never think of. ("Try putting your chorus at the end etc", sure you get information online, then like I've said, don't even bother having a forum?)

I understand some issues, people don't search, learn, creating unnecessary threads, giving moderators and laojiaos a hard time. Then I suggest either, enforce a strict code rule (making the forum into a even more uptight environment), redirect pages to wiki or google, OR just forget about this whole issue and walk on. I guess the saga will never ends; and I don't mean mine ;)

i love human behaviour. it's such a quirky little thing that we all can't help but laugh it when it falls outside what we deem to be, and therefore subjective softie-social norms.

like Paperback said, takes 2 hands to clap. are we going to get ants in our pants and get all fired up when somebody asks, say "is a tube amp better than a solid state amp?". we all know how often such questions pop up. whether said question asker is 1) posting innocently 2) being a troll 3) any other funky reason you can think of, we really don't know, do we?

for those who would tear their hair out and then rip apart such questionators to shreds, just pretend it's all a bad dream.. and let it pass. we canNOT expect everyone to think at the same level. even if we want it to be, it's never going to happen.

in a nutshell for the pek chek ones: just stay off. let those who have the patience to spoonfeed do their thing.

now for those who want to be spoonfed.. either innocently or deliberately, now you know how SOME people feel. and that's perfectly normal. you can carry on asking questions, that's fine. just be smart, exercise some discernment and KNOW A FLAME WHEN IT'S A FLAME. don't be meat to the lion's den and respond to the bloody flame. just take whatever info you think is useful to you and leave it at that.

in a nutshell for people in this profile: it's alright to ask anything you want, but very alrighter to read up before asking. if you cannot/don't want to/don't know how to/can't be bothered to learn, then you can have a rough idea of what to expect from the rest of the community here.
