I want to replace my SB Live! and price wise, i feel attracted by the EMU 0404... but when i read the review on the web, i worry a bit...

Anybody who has experienced it in a home studio recording environment? with what hardware and what sequencer?

Thanks in advance,
Koala

...more complicated to set up is impossible...
The one who wrote the review seems to be a musician... and he seems to have been through a lot of deceptions and frustrations with the 0404...

As I believe it is the same soft that the 1212, i checked and there nothing in that direction... that is why i ask...

Does anybody has good or bad experience using the EMU 0404 in a home studio environment?

I don't have an EMU 0404 but I downloaded the manual from
www.emu.com

Doesn't look complicated to me (my Pulsar system seems a lot worse where you have to do a lot of internal patching via software).

Have a read and decide for yourself. As with any new hardware, there is a learning curve.

Don't forget, the EMU 0404 is not upgradeable to the EMULATOR X system, unlike its' more powerful sister cards (1212M, 1820,1820M).

Hi Koala, did you see that Creative ad in the papers too? I checked out the EMU soundcards... EMU admitted their WDM drivers aren't too good now. Their ASIO drivers are apparently better, so check that your music software can support ASIO. (Cubase use ASIO, newer Cakewalk use ASIO or WDM, older Cakewalk use WDM only.)

Also, the series ending with "M" like 1212m or 1820M have got superior AD-DA (24/196?) convertors. These are worth the extra buck if you want better sound quality. 1212M is expandable, 0404 is not.

the 0404 is comparable to M-audio's 24/96, and way cheaper too. Problem is their lack of GSIF drivers (for gigasampler) and lousy WDM drivers. The EMU mixer software has been reviewed to be very versatile, but tricky to start using. So you may have to read the manual very carefully.

You know you'll probably need a mixer too, right? :)

I'm aiming for the 1212m myself, but my current software only support WDM. Anyone knows where I can buy Cakewalk software upgrade in SG? I can order it through the net, but the USD35 shipping is so not worth it...

Upgrading is not possible with the 2 distributors in Singapore e.g. Challenger @Funan & Para D etc.

[IF you have broadband], try if you can download

great input Potion

I do not have the performance requirements of the EMU1212 though I would love to buy it, the difference of price is not worth it for my home composition platform.
I am now very decided for the EMU0404.

Concerning the mixer... Yes, I understood that I need that too... and my choice now is to take the Yamaha MG10/2. Any oppinion on that mixer is welcomed.

My attention now goes on the output... I have a couple of nice speakers but in comparison with my TDK computer speakers I paid S$79 for... my monitors do not sound that great (for the S$500 I paid for them)...

What is the best solution as far as the ouput is concerned? Pasive monitors or powered monitor? amplifier from tv / hifi shop or amplifier from music shops?
My target is to have a nice sound out of the computer and instruments.

Thanks for advising me.

Try using Vpost (a service from Singpost). Shipping would probably cost about S$30.
But don't order from a California dealer or else you have to pay the local sales tax.

OR alternatively, you can consider buying programs that are sold over the internet connection eg Fruity Loops.

This one I owned for few months and sold it. coz..this generated noise on the speakers and some times earthing problems. Behringer is better than this. also consider Alesis multifx series..

You can go for MSP5 from yamaha or KRK Rokit which is around the same range (500 bucks)

MG10/2 to be reconsidered then...

Any advise on what model would be a good replacement for the MG10/2 or any other opinion on the MG10/2?

Look out for Behringer UB1202 or Alesis Multifx 8 channel version 8)

Or if you can afford go for Mackie 1202..

Go to few shops in SLS(Performance Audio, Hung Bros), Sweelee and take a look at the models..

I bought my Behringer from Hung Bros..Quite a nice deal and look out for Douglas there..Nice chap..and have all the brands..on display hooked up..

Thanks... Vpost looks like a very good option! I gotta reset my password though, it's been too long since I logged in. I know www.zzsounds.com has some very good deals (USD499 for Sonar3.1, free upgrade to Sonar4), and free shipping to US... But I think I can't use my SG visa, as they need to verify the address. Have you used Vpost to buy music stuff online? Any good sites to recommend? :)

I'm trying to use it to order a EMU XL-1 Turbo that is being blown out at US$400. But I'm unsure as to whether the billing address is the Vpost address or credit card address. Still awaiting a reply on that.

But even if the company refuses to accept a SGP credit card, you could always work out something with them eg telegraphic transfer.

All the Creative Pro (EMU) Soundcards are available at Creative HQ in Jur. East. Myt friend bought 2 days ago. Dont spend your money overseas by paying high shipping charges.

Go to Creative HQ and check first before ordereing overseas..

For info...

Just received my tax invoice for a delivery through vpostUSA. Turns out, besides the shipping charges, they also add 5%GST!!! End up paying $10 more to use this service; than if I were to have it shipped directly to my home. ('')
