I said what i said because there's too many people asking too many generic "which is the best" questions when alot of it relies on preference. Like the eternal debate between Gibson and Fender and which is better than the other.

Anyway, you asked a more answerable question, so i'll answer it. =)

Firstly you have to determine what genres you'll be playing most frequently ... and in those genres what kind of tone will you be looking for. When it comes to tone it varies from one person to the other. Some would prefer a more vintage tone, others a mad quad coil pickup for that fat bass tone.

if you are unsure my recommendation would to go with either a P or J tone to your bass. It's a workable tone across a wide spectrum of genres. check out either the 35P or the 35J replacements they have. EMG pickups are more known to have a higher/hotter output due to their active circuitry in the pickups itself. In that case you may get a wider dynamic range across the frequencies and your tone cuts better in the mix. then again, it's preference. those old dubbish vintage tone works equally well if that's what you are looking for.

so ... determine for youself. really.

preference
