Hello, Im tempted to get an EMG 81/85 set for my Ibanez rgr321ex. However, Ive heard people advice not to waste money on a good pair of pickups for average guitars... Will I be wasting my money? Any advice would be much appreciated thanks!

If the mod to your guitar makes you happy
then theoretically you are not wasting $$

the minimum benefits EMG active gives u is that u can remove the ground wire to/from
the bridge.
And if your guitar is prev prone to hum, EMGs will also cure tat.
( but might introduce hiss problems instead : )

If you like the 321 very much and you'll have the foresight that you would'nt change your guitar somewhere near in the future. Why not?

Well, try to read up descriptions on the SOUND of the 81s.

Thin, plastic, brittle, overly bright, etc etc have been used to describe it.

Cutting, powerful, metal and lots of chug come from it too.

They seem to be suited for metal and they are very metal... and that's it. You might want some versatility... and heck, you might still NOT like the way they sound to begin with!

If you can, audition a few other models before setting your mind on the EMGs. You also have to remember that the EMGs are active pickups which mean you need to deal with the fact that they need 9v batteries.

Other worthy contenders to slap into your axe ov heavy metal which would slay the naysayers, would be

For screaming high pitched stuff with a nearly lethal dose of mids:
Dimarzio X2N (bridge & neck)
Dimarzio D Activator set
Dimarzio D Activator-X set

Something for a load of chug would be:
Seymour Duncan AHB1/AHB2 Blackouts/Blackouts Metal
Note that this is also an active pickup and thus require 9v power. The blackouts metal pickup set is an evolution of the older LiveWire metal set, you might just want to give it a listen, you might find it too whiny.

Anyway, good luck on your search for pickups!

doesnt really matter what kinda pickups are in the guitar if u wanna play metal, i can do that with really really low output single coils with a raging tube amp. i wonder if u can do metal with emgs thru a practice amp.

I agree pentatonic, there is always a misconception that low-medium output pickups cant do metal. Well after taking advice from sub, now i am using seymour duncan 59' and dimarzio air norton on my ibanez s670se to very gd effect, lots of overtones, warmth, harmonics, control and chug to some extent haha! With this combi, i can pretty much play any genre of music from blues to prog rock and metal lol!

But if EMG gets the sound that u envision in ur mind then by all means get them, although i would suggest that u hear more sound clips or better yet try out ur friend's axe with EMGs to hear the real deal, cheers!
