electric guitar pickups

oh i dun mean that what i mean is are most guitar suitbable to put actives cos i think a hole needs to dug to accomodate the pup? are there size contraints and such to put in actives

active pups like emgs dont really have limits such as suitable wood material cause it'll still sound the same if you put it in a mahogonay body compared to a basswood body.there is no need to reroute the pup cavity for emgs cause its still a humbucker unless your guitars are meant for p90 pups only.

for guitars not equipped with active units initially, if you want EMGs in one, the consideration here is- there should be enough space in the pot cavity (or elsewhere) to house the battery.

Hi Sub,

That means if all 3 pickups in a strat are changed to active pickups there would still be just one battery right? Just curious, never seen a guitar with active pickups, where does the battery go? Do you need to cut the wood and stuff? There is one person selling a strat with active pickups but I dont see any battery anywhere!

Sorry for my brilliant knowledge :).

guitar pickups- they sound the same to the uninitiated/ new but as you progress & try out different guitars & pickups, you'd hear acure differences which would deem one 'different' from the other.
+1. No doubt each pickup would sound different from one another... even those of the same make and model may sound different from each other. The subtle differences would most probably detected by audiophiles and only be felt subconsciously by the rest of us.

However, my point was: getting distracted and spending too much time trying to nail the "right" tone through mindless change of pickups that sound similar (but not exactly the same) will make us neglect practising which, imo, is way much more important if one wants to sound "good".

So one advice is, try to categorise similar sounding pickups and decide which group of sound you want. Avoid worrying about how different a PAF Joe is from a PAF Pro, or how different a Dimarzio PAF is from a SD PAF.

Similar but not exactly the same. You can try to subcategorise them to the vintage output/medium output and brighter/fatter in this case.

basically all the PAFs are similar in sound?

they are kinda operating on a common plane but each manufacturer adds their own ingredient to the palette.

if you tread too much on the pickup ground trying to acquire tone nirvana, you'd be wasting time of your amplifier isn't up to it. in fact, for a more rewarding investment in tone, amps do better than pickups.

Very sound advice of not neglecting other areas which contribute to the final tone. Its like cars. You wanna zhng cars to be better, can't just focus on changing engine... Gotta balance between various parts like brakes, tyres, and most importantly, the driver's skills.
