ok, so you want an effect that will change your tone to make it suitable for your slap solos, instead of fiddling with the tone/vol knobs halfway through the song?
depends on what you want. it helps if you could tell us the normal settings on your bass, and what are the changes you make when you adjust them for slap
normally for a slap solo its usually about compressing it to limit the pop from peaking =] and depends whether ur much of an effects person... i might add a little overdrive or fuzz =D
compressors, choruses etc help, but what you need is an equaliser. the same shit as what you are doing with you onboard electronics, only in a pedal which u can stomp on/off
so you can set your bass to normal settings, and adjust the eq to your slap settings. when you wanna solo you stomp on the pedal.
got 2 types of eq, parametric
(this is a preamp with a 3-band parametric eq that i recently bought)
still i think specifically for slap/pop a compressor or limiter would be ideal =] but basically its all the "effects" that dont colour your tone, but shapes it up la.... i don't think chorus is suitable for a slap/pop solo... more for a slow groovy solo imho =] but i'm still trying to learn how to maximize using an eq... currently i dont even switch on the eq effect on my boss me-8b as it generates a little too much hiss =(
ok i just realise parametric eq's are not really suitable for your use. because they are almost always part of a preamp. and a preamp is not something you wanna switch off or bypass halfway through a song. and they tend to be damn expensive. but anyway here's another one GASS
anyway i also use a compressor. AND a chorus. they are all good. i am still waiting for someone to return from the states with my SD paranormal. the 'slap contour' switch looks extremely promising
I think you are my former officemate in the Philippines.
For slap, not really much effect. The trick is a switchable pre-amp or eq so you can switch from slap to solo mode. For Slap the setting is the mid-scoop a.k.a. the smiling face setting where the bass and treble are boosted and the mid freq is cut. Compressor is nice so you wont go too loud when doing slap and pop. If your preamp or onboard preamp has a bright switch, turn it on.
an effect/preamp that can be used will be the sansamp bass driver DI programmable... but there are some other brands as well that offer preamp preset selection via footswitch too. This works like a charm... have 1 setting for slap, 1 for boosted fat tone and 1 for normal smooth finger plucking.
