earphones help

Hi need some advice:
My earphones wear out easily, about 1 or 2 pairs a year.

Usually it's because one side spoils due to continuous bending/usage. The wire inside the rubber doesn't connect.

Are there any shops that can fix/solder the wire back, so that I don't have to buy a new pair everytime?

You can try any one of the hardware shops in Sim Lim Towers (note: not Sim Lim Square). I usually go down to a corner shop in the basement (pretty huge 1) cos my soldering skills sux. Just tell the uncle there what you need. Should be able to do it at a reasonable price.

P.s perhaps you wanna consider buying a container for your earphones so that it does not get roughed up while in storage or transit?

A simple solder job should cost around there bah.

I haven't been down there for a long time so better to give the shops a call before heading down. You can try space B1 (62989194) or suntronics 5th floor (63383882) to get a feel of the cost...

1 or 2 pairs a ear is typical for most people

Would advice buying a new pair and keeping them in a container. You probably wrap the ear phones around your mp3 right? Don't do that, it'll spoil faster

Hi thanks!

However I tried calling the 2 shops, and both were very rude. Gave a flat out 'NO' when I asked if got repair earphones.

'We don't have technicians, we only sell things.'
Well I won't recommend buying anything from them ever.

Will drop by and check out the other shops there for soldering =)

As for storage of earphones: Should we coil or not? What is the proper method for wires.
Even some 'storage devices' require u to coil around them

Lol the curse of sim lim...sorry mate that's the 2 numbers i have off-hand. You can pop by the many shops there to ask if you have the time.

You can coil it and put it in a small plastic container (maybe a namecard container?). It should keep your earphones safe and sound. I don't really recommend using those fishbone wraps thingamijig...they tend to make my wires go out of control when i remove them from it...

There's no proper method to storing wired electronics, only that you should keep in mind not to bend joints and solders. As the others have said try to get a pair of earphones with a container, else even a pouch is alright if you do a free coil (coil it round 3 fingers and store the resulting roll, as long as you don't force the wires to contour hard objects).

I would also recommend just getting new earphones if your pair can even last that long (the average ones I used to use lasted 6 or 8 months). I don't see the point of a what... 10 dollar repair when your earphones cost 60 bucks. Or even 80.

You can always invest in a really good pair of earphones. Besides delivering great sound, the materials are innately better, and they do go to some extra effort to reduce usual wear. Ultimate Ears for example, which I'm using, puts abit of hard wire at the edge of the earphone cable (not the audio jack side) so that the earphones sit firmly on your ear, and also to protect probably the most vulnerable part of the whole product. In addition, phones and wires are detachable, so if your internal wires are frayed due to wear, you can just unplug it and get yourself a replacement cable. Others use a different method of signal transmission such that the cable is a freely twisting snap-hinge. It's expensive, so if you go for it make a good choice, but if you do, it will probably save you some money in the (very) long run.

my advise is you head to Causeway Point and look for the shop called "Stereo"
They got a wide range of earphones, able to satisfy those on a budget and those looking to splurge under one roof

As far as I know, that kind of problem no one repairs.Even if its under warranty and you send to the manufacturer, they'll replace with another 1.

^ not really i stretched my audio technica headphones cables = no sound, brought it to their office they just replaced the cable but still same headphone

best way to keep your earphones is to coil it loosely and then keep in a pouch. dont coil it around your mp3 player too tightly cos it will damage the wires (which is most likely the reason why one side suddenly no sound).

can also head down to jaben if you really want to try different earphones/headphones.

For me I used Shure earphones, over $100. Still break easily haha.
Maybe i use it way too much.
I shall keep my new pair in a case, and see how long it lasts.

Where's Jaben, in simlim?

4th floor up the spiral staircase behind the bright shop with the blue sign, forgot the name.

Even if there's no warranty, you'll probably work something out with them. They're awfully nice people.

But then there's always a danger of walking out $500 poorer. :)
