Drumshop In Los Angeles

While in LA recently I visited the Westside branch of Guitar Centre...most people would know the GC at Sunset but this branch is actually more central..depending where one lives. Typically it's full of interesting stuff...and the staff all know their shit. I took some photos but I don't know how to post them here...

Wow...can't wait to see....go to photobucket.com and upload the photos there....then copy the link at the bottom of each photo..and paste it here....it will auto appear here...

Thank for the advice and assist..but I am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to such things. Better if I send the photos to someone (like Eric) and let him post them here.

Hey Frank,

Aiya, I so blur, I didn't know you were headed to the US and visiting drum shops. I need to buy some Ludwig brushes, which are hard to buy even on the internet, cuz some of these American shops don't accept foreign credit cards... grrr!

Maybe have to go through Nigel...

Peace!

Hi Audrey,

Haven't seen any Ludwig brushes in the few LA shops I checked out..plenty of Vic Firths, Regal Tips, and Vaters. I was looking for the heavy Vic Firths (white) but couldn't find them either.

If you can locate a vendor thru the net, I can arrange to have it sent to my son who is based in NY. He can then despatch it to me..that's how I overcome the credit card problem. Using Pay Pal also helps.

BTW you should check out the Evans ECI coated light snare heads.. I had one installed in the snare that I store at the CC...great sensitivity for jazz work. Don't think they are stocking it here yet.

Haven't been round to check out your Bar Stop gig..too distracted lah but aim to soon.

Hi Bruce,

Trip was very rewarding but not from a music perspective. I was busy catching up with friends in the LA area, and also performing parental (grandparental) duties. Nights were quite busy socially, so gave the music dives a miss..not that there were many great jazz acts going at the time. Didn't even make it to NY this time as my NY son came over to LA instead. I did not relish flying US domestic...as it turned out it would have been a fiasco had I gone to NY because flights were delayed for hours and then cancelled due to bad weather and lazy pilots !!

I tried to look up old Joe Porcaro in Thousand Oaks Ca.,on my way to Camarillo but couldn't get him on the phone.

Otherwise an uneventful trip and I was beginning to miss my more hectic Singapore lifestyle after 2 weeks.

Hey Frank,

Regarding the brushes, I can have it delivered to the vPostUSA address, but my problem is the store (and there are very few that carry the Ludwig L195) doesn't accept foreign credit cards, nor do they have a Pay Pal payment gateway.

I haven't tried the Evans head yet. Is it the Edge Control? I swear by the EC-2 for toms. They really make the drums sing :-D Will try to drop by and try your snare ;)

Peace.

Have you tried Drummer's World at 151 W 46th St Manhattan ? I managed to find a lot of interesting gear there that other shops do not stock..and they are willing to order it for you if not in stock. And they take credit cards but I normally get my son in NY to handle for me.

On brushes have you tried the Clayton Cameron signature brushes by Regal Tip? Come and check mine out if you drop my. The only other drummer with a pair is old Louis who "appropriated" a pair off me some time back.

The EC1 is part of the Edge Control series..EC1 being single ply and EC2 a twin ply head. They come with the coated texture incorporated into the head and not sprayed on like other heads. It's just nice for playing brushes right off...brand new heads take a bit of seasoning to get the brush surface right.

Hi Frank,

Ok will check out Drummers' World. I've tried the Clayton Cameron's, they're good, but I still prefer that the Ludwig L195's are floppier. It's got a more old-school feel than the newer brushes like the Clayton Cameron, or the Vic Firth ones.

Yeah, am keen to try out the coated EC1's to see how they compare with Remo Renaissance head, which is what I use on my Ludwig snare. It's got the feel as you describe of the EC1's -- great off the bat with brushes without "running in". Will try to drop by Tanglin CC.

Peace
