drum roll

Practice slower first? Keep a slow constant speed with metronome while relaxed.

What kind of roll are you doing? Single strokes, double strokes, closed/buzz roll?

heh me too.. i juz started learn roll a few months back. now still v uneven.. left hand weaker then right, thus slower.. i nid train my left hand more.. perhaps nxt time play open hand on drumset or play left-hander config =X

the reason why you cramp up is because you dont relax while playing. if you dont let your wrists relax, its like tying a stick to a plank of wood and moving that plank of wood. so much more effort.

key tip. do a few fingers and wrists exercises before you start playing.

go to youtube and watch a few hand technique videos.
it sounds so cliche to say "practice" but. you really have to.

i was in your situation not long ago. learning proper wrist movements and proper finger technique really makes it easier to play and also makes me a lot faster.

do you mean single stroke roll?

if it is, then the crucial thing here is muscle memory. of course, other methods like relaxing your wrists, practising at slower tempos etc do help, but playing the single stroke often enough till your muscle remembers is probably the sure-est way to master it.

it's like running a marathon, you need to progressively clock 5, 10, 20 till the full 42? other methods like hydration, rest and diet all help but the crux is letting your body / muscles adapt.

I was a drummer..
TS,to make your drum roll skill perfect.
Just start from the slow like 1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2
after you have master the 1st level,you move on
1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2
(Remember,don't hold the drumsticks tightly coz if you did,the drumstick wont bounce up)
after that, 1212121212121212121212121212121212
and from there u can drum roll..
Or maybe
4 seconds in each beat and move on:
1--2--1--2--1--2--1--2--1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1-2-1212121212121212121212......

Legend:
1 = Right
2 = Left

1st level:
4 seconds = Every 1(Right) hit is 1 sec= Example: (1) 2 (1) 2 (1) 2 (1) 2
2nd level:
4 seconds = Every 1(Right) of 2 set is 1 sec= Example: (1) 2 1 2 (1) 2 1 2 (1) 2 1 2 (1) 2 1 2
3rd level:
4 seconds = Every 1(Right) of 3 set is 1 sec= Example (1)21212(1)21212(1)21212(1)21212

1 2 = 1 set
1 2 1 2 = 2set
121212 = 3set

Dont think of other things..

Hmm u talking about doiing four beat,eight beat, sixteen beat, thirty two beat? hahaha.

hey i can roll le =D

Basically wad i did was i started warm up by riding on left hand n snare on rite instead ( im a rightie).. i even put the ride cymbal on my left.. after the warm up, ur weaker hand (left) will be more warmed up then ur right somehow.. that makes both hands consistant.

That was just what i did.. Its just for sharing.. i dun expect it to work too.. coz i did that for my case, my own problems faced when i roll.
