Drum Fills

This is the most exciting subject I would like to discuss with all Drummers.

The best kept secrets of Drum Fills will never be taught to other drummers because of many factors. One of the main reasons is that they do not want others to have the same knowledge as them as He/She will be able to get his clinics packed.

Well, for me, I strongly believe in growing together in the Drumming Community exchanging knowledges & ideas improving together as drummers.

If any of you have exciting drum fills to share. Pls do so for our fellow softees.

I hope I'm able to help out with starting this thread.

Maybe just in simple form like for e.g. I'm going to start with the simplest. Like for the 8th note fill.

1. Snare = 2 hits
2. High Tom = 2 hits
3. Mid Tom = 2 hits
4. Floor Tom = 2 hits

These Fills are for 1 whole bar.

Any takers out there?

Based on what facts do you say this? "The best kept secrets of Drum Fills will never be taught to other drummers because of many factors. One of the main reasons is that they do not want others to have the same knowledge as them as He/She will be able to get his clinics packed."

I personally have never met a single drummer that wouldn't show me a phrase or two when I asked. I have even written to Peter Erskine and Jojo Mayer and they were both really prompt in answering my questions. Besides, youtube have TONS of people sharing their favourite licks and fills too.

Also, crajche is right. It is really difficult to write stuff down here and that is the reason why I only post exercises up with graphic files created from scoring softwares. Writing it the way you wrote will not work for everyone because not every drummer understand what eighth notes mean. Perhaps we can create video files of our ideas and share the youtube links thru here?

alvinthedrummer = OK I do agree with you as it is an actual fact. The main subject I wanna bring up is actually abt "Drum Fills".

Magnimas = I did not use any scoring software. Just trying my best to help out with what I understand.

Hope you guys can give good suggestions abt this topic.

Hmm for fills, I suggest you must be familiar with rudiments. But I think the most useful for MYSELF are singles, doubles and triplets. Take for example, your fill comes on the 3-a-4-a of a rock beat.

You can do a RRLL on the 3, a single on the a, RLRL on the 4 and a single on the a. Or alternatively, you could choose to leave out the a on the 3 to give the fill some space and sound less busy. I wonder if I made it complicated but I'm just trying to illustrate how you can incorporate rudiments into fills to make it sound good. Actually, the fills are 5-stroke rolls too (there are more possibilities) which are really good building blocks for you to look at.

Experiment with a metronome and see what sounds good in different musicial situations. You don't wan to be accused of bad sounding fills in the wrong contexts. Sometimes the best fills are long sometimes they aren't but the most important is that it should sound good and appropriate. On top of that, try to experiment around and come up with your own style.

Hi Zac,

I have been watching Benny Greb Language of Drumming DVD lately :) I guess it is pretty interesting and it helps in developing ur own fill in and how u would want to phrase what you have practice :) one example of what I learnt from Benny Greb lately is using

1) Radio ==> Ra Di O (triplets) (3 beats) - 1 2 3
2) University ==> Uni Ver Si Ty (5 beats) ( 1 2 1 2 3) accent on the 1s
3) Listen to the radio ==>(7 beats) Lis Ten To The Ra Di O (1 2 1 2 1 2 3) accent on the 1s

Put this 3 patterns into 16th note subdivision...

one example for you:
1 e n a 2 e n a 3 e n a 4 e n a
Lis Ten To The Ra Di O Lis Ten To The Ra Di O

As you can see the n & a is nothing:

drums phrasing for the example was:
7 + 7 + 2 = 16th feel-in

you can use single stroke :)

Hope it helps =D hope my sharing can help you! :) got qn, can prvt msg me or ask other drummers for advice =D Learning the language of ABC helps too

Binary
A ==> 1 - - -
B ==> - e - -
C ==> - - n -
D ==> - - - a
E ==> 1 e - -
F ==> - e n -
G ==> - - n a
H ==> 1 - - a
I ==> 1 - n -
J ==> - e - a
K ==> 1 e n -
L ==> - e n a
M ==> 1 - n a
N ==> 1 e - a
O ==> 1 e n a
P ==> - - - -
Ternary
Q ==> 1 - -
R ==> - n -
S ==> - - a
T ==> 1 n -
U ==> - n a
V ==> 1 - a
W ==> 1 n a
X -==> - - -

Looking at all this alphabets :) practicing accentings with this and mixing around and maybe create your own words into fill-in?? :) that is my personal thoughts :) " - " means dont need to play... ROCK ON!
