Drum Battle Video

Yeah who can forget this video... In terms of chops, Vinnie C. totally owned the others... but I perked up whenever Gadd played. He has a way of making things simple yet musical.

Yeah. Vinnie C's chops are killer. He received the most cheers in the vid lol. I liked the way Steve Gadd laid down the main groove for Dave Weckl and Vinnie C to solo on.

hey guys,
i just loved the way steve gadd played. i got kinda bored when the others started the solos really. but when gadd started on the crazy army solo oooooooo and when he came in with that cowbell my god! hahahha
i'm still a groove kinda guy, the chops were cool for the first round.

i dunno y pple all say that vinnie played the best in that video.
well i guess not everyone has the same taste..

personally i felt that dave's solos had more flow that vinnie.. vinnie no doubt has chops, but it's not as smooth as dave's. dave's solos really FLOWED like diarrhoea man.. haha ok but seriously i think dave played the best. vinnie's so overrated in that video.

To me, Dave played perfect... which is always boring to me. It didn't have the "WTH WAS THAT?!?" element that I felt with Vinnie. Vinnie is way more aggressive and spontaneous, which crazy hand/foot combinations. His stick control is crazily good. I think it's the human touch that connected with me.

I get the feeling that (in terms of chops) only a person who knows what they're doing will really appreciate it. Kind of like asking a mat rocker to appreciate classical... he ain't gonna like it because he doesn't understand it at all, and not because it sucks or due to preference.

But I'm not saying anyone here is inferior or anything, k?

objectively speaking, vinnie played around more with dynamics and power chops in his solo, which definitely grabs the average listener more than the musically discerning.

as for dave, i find his phrasing interesting, he seemed to be composing a musical piece based on the pitchiing of drums/cymbals. for gadd, i thought he was really into the 'in the pocket' and focusing on GROOVE.

3 different approaches i guess, what catches you is probably what your own personal preference is

yup definitely alfie, preference man. but i have to say i'm alittle dissapointed tht the main emphasis is still chops among alot of drummers still. no ones talking abt the groovers. i'm not saying chops is unnessacery, u defintely do need it to be able to express urself properly. but i feel its abit one sided in tht too much emphasis is being placed in chops and being able to handle very complex co ordination. its my experience is that excellant groovers make the other musicians gooo yeahhhH baby!! over here the groovers get so many gigs that they have to reject half of them cause they got no timee! a couple of the really crazy independence guys over here dun really get called cause they just can't groove. fair enough if u hate grooving and love busting chops, i say do wat u love.

vinnie's face when he plays is quite funny. sorry i can't help but notice their facial expressions lar. but Gadd has a lot of feeling. i think his grooves are very smooth. Weckl's solos have a certain kind of structure. somehow the mood that his drumming brings you into has a certain up and down to it. like a climax. i think thats cool. as for Colaiuta? well his facial expressions are worth mentioning. besides that, i like the way his solos look like he's living as if there's no tomorrow. okay anyway, i don't think i've got enough to comment that much. just my impressions.
