Double Delays help!

Hi all,

Need some feedback and opinion about double delays :) I have a BOSS DD-3 as well as a MXR Carbon Copy. It is in that order before the output goes out to the amp.

Just wondering..

Is it possible to get dotted 8 delay on those pedals?
Are there any recommended settings for those pedals? MXR actually sounds thicker and warmer, but im afraid my settings for that might be the same for DD3.
Should i sell off the DD3 and get a DD7 or the 20?

Or if u have any suggestions or recommendations, please do let me know! haha am in the process of getting new delay sounds :)

Thanks all!

1) Is it possible to get dotted 8 delay on those pedals?
Yes and no. You can achieve the "dotted 8th delay" sound, but you have to manually find the delay time setting since both pedals don't have tap tempo. For example for a song at 120 beats per minute (bpm) in 4/4 time signature, a dotted 8th note would be 375 milliseconds. Your pedals don't have display for ms either but at least that should help you find the range to use.

2) Recommended settings? Not really. There are so many uses of delay. The MXR will definitely have some high cut compared to the DD-3, making it sound warmer.

3) If you have the money and the space on your pedalboard, I prefer the DD-20 to the DD-7. The LED display, added footswitch and other features are very useful for exploring more delay settings. But Boss is not the only option...

i see.. so it depends on my tempo, of the song yes? What is dotted 8 exactly? haha i have been using delays for a long time but only adjust my tone to what sounds nice and suitable, not very technical.

hmm okay :) dd 20. i prob would consider that.. or would a tc nova delay be good also?

If you at least know what 4/4 means, that's 4 quarter notes in a bar right? An eighth note is, as expected, half the duration of a quarter note. And a dot means "add half of the note's duration", so a dotted eighth is 50% longer than an eighth.

In terms of a 120 beat per minute song in 4/4,
quarter note = 500ms long
eighth note = 250ms
dotted eighth note = 375ms

Between the two, I find the DD-20 slightly easier to use, but the Nova Delay has certain advantages like global tap tempo and more presets. I think it just comes down to which you prefer, if you have a chance to test both.

yea I love double delays stacked in series. I use that for my solo in my recordings. You can get a very lush tone. For me I prefer analog delays, so I've asked scott from sound alchemy to build me a double analog delay pedal and it can switch from series to pararell mode. When I get the pedal I'll do a demo for it.
