Djembe basics

Toca Synergy Black Mamba

It is a matter of personal choice depending on your preference. If your prefer softer fingering and a lighter djembe - Toca is good value for money choice. But if one prefer fingering and also hard slap and tone resonant - go for the Remo.

Suggest try it out before making your final decision.

Bro, in the beginning, I did quite like the REMO... but after playing for a long while.. I realized that the TOCA actually produces a better sound as compared to the REMO. Its that blasted ringing that I cant stand when you give the REMO a high tone.

Advice!

Hi guys, hoping for some advice from the Djembe players here.

1. Would a larger Djembe sound louder and hence, more bassier?
2. Would the mechanically tuned Djembes sound inferior?
3. Goat skin or synthetic skin?

Basically, I'm looking for a mechanically tuned Djembe for convenience and maintainence's sake. Also, I'm looking for one with a deep-sounding bass. However, I do not know what size to get and whether to use a goat skin or synthetic skin.

Thanks! Really appreciate it if you could answer my questions ;)

Mechanical tuned ones are easier to maintain and easy for quick change if its head gets broken. For one with a deep sounding bass, a 12 - 14 inch is good. But mind you, the wider the surface area, there is that irritating ringing sound every time you hit the tone.

Be it goat skin or synthetic, its your personal preference. Though I'd say synthetic so its all weather proof.

Cheers mate

Hey guys, just thought i'd let you know about this little shop around Beach Road. Not sure that the name of the shop is, but it's just infront of the Malay Heritage centre. They sell a couple of hand drums like djembes etc. and on Friday nights, a small group of people gather to play the drums available (Impromptu lessons available for no charge at all). The people there are friendly and will be more than willing to teach you about the techniques and patterns of playing the djembe. ;)

Hi guys,
I am thinking of picking this up as a hobby and just wondering, do you guys always go outside the house to play the djembe?
I stay in HDB, is it 'legal' to play in the house?

Please advise.
Thanks.
