Distortion and Overdrives.....

Hmm, i'm thinking of adding a distortion/overdrive to my efx... Been looking at boss... So i'm just wondering what is the difference between a distortion and a overdrive... other then distortion sounds more fuzzy while overdrive is not so bad...

Any recommendation? Ds-1 and SD-1 what's the diff....

Hmm.

Perhaps you could give us a list of your influences and then we sofites could have some inkling as to which type of dirt would suit your desired musical output.

For example, I love AC/DC so I love that balls-to-the-wall Marshall sound.

hmm, my influence ranges from Clapton-G&R-Rock(i.e: 5 for fighting, Bon jovi, creed etc...)

Something which allows me to play crunchy/chunky rock...

Hmm.

I would recommend you try out the DS-1, OD-3 from BOSS, or perhaps you can try out some of the Marshall pedal offerings, or give mr Edder a PM regarding his OD pedal.

0 pedals man.
i think they ddnt use a lot of distortion either.
they've got super heavy guage strings and
are super tight.

Hmm.

X-patchy-X, the tone I have is close enough for me but obviously since I don't pwn a Gibson SG nor a wall of marshalls 8O I have to make do with a few pedals to get as close as possible to the sound in my head :)

Currently my rig consists of this:

Guitar (Epi SG w/ GFS high-output pickups or Fender Tele or Single-PAF Mongrel Strat)
V
EHX switchblade > tuner out
V
Marshall Guvnor 2 (used for Fender-styled guitars)
V
Dunlop 95Q modded
V
MXR Distortion + (for slight grit a la country rhythm)
V
Danelectro Daddy O Overdrive (Used for Gibson-styled guitar)
V
Danelectro FAB Chorus
V
Behringer BEQ700 bass EQ (turned on all the time to fatten and clean up the overall sound)
V
EHX LPB-1 volume booster
V
BOSS PS-5 harmoniser
V
Vox Pathfinder 15R set to clean channel

With the few pedals I use, can get a nice chunky sound, especially from the Guvnor 2.

Edder - heheh... i wish i could have had more time to play around with your pedal... maybe pass me one so I can endorse? :P

Here's another noob Qn...is there a specific order of pedals that need to be connected 2 the amp first b4 others?? Like for example i have 2 pedals...a distortion pedal and a delay...which of em do i connect first??? 8O

If its just the 2 then...

Guitar----Dist----Delay---->Amp.

Try searching the forums for pedal arrangements you'd see a couple of threads dicussing it.

ah... the drive quest...

when it comes to overdrive/ distortion, try as many as possible & choose accordingly. more importantly, embrace the ones which work for you, regardless of the brand name. be wary of the recommendations by others, while it's good to note the opinions, the final output (the tone that you hear) may not be desireable/ useful to you. do note what the drive has in store tone-wise as oppossed to believing it is a 'good' or 'bad' offering. if it helps, refer to the reviews available here.

Difference between Overdrive and Distortion...

Hmmm...To start off, an Overdrive effect pedal offers very little tone shaping controls. It’s main duty is to boost your guitar’s input signal, adding that extra punch and dirt to your overall sound. For practical applications, think of distortion pedals as those simulating the distortion or hi-gain channel of your amp.

To add to the confusion which you are already going thorugh, there's also fuzz pedal which is another form of distortion...haha. Fret not, I have writtten an article on my blog on the differences between these 3 effects.
