Well, it really depends. I have seen rather extreme cases in each, but of course they may just belong to the minority. I have seen really awesome MIC guitars, compared to MIJ in terms of workmanship.
But then again, when you try a guitar, try to ignore the country of origin and just try to see whether it bonds with you or not.
You may be trying a custom handcrafted boutique guitar MIA, but it may not seem to be able to bond with you. But you may feel that you play even better with a $1k guitar or even $500 with similar specs.
To me it's all about the chemistry between the guitar and you, if there's chemistry, you'll feel it immediately, no chemistry you feel like you don't know what to play or that you're playing so well on the guitar.
