Diaphragm and Throat

Physically, you always use both your diaphragm and your throat to sing! But some singing theories use "diaphragm" and "throat" as ideas to guide your voice toward a particular configuration.

IMHO, more important is "release", which is making sure your throat is not squeezing in an attempt to produce sound at a particular pitch.

Holding back air and reducing air flow (also called "breath support") is I believe what people mean when they say "sing from the diaphragm". Too much air and you'll just be struggling to hold it back, not singing. I never found the "sing from the diaphragm" idea useful myself. It just encouraged me to use more pressure.

Singing from your diaphragm gives your voice a fuller tone, singing from your throat sounds very thin and it's really up to your style, there's no right or wrong.

But it's best to breathe with your diaphragm, so that you'll have a lot of air and support. Your stomach should feel tight, like you're taking a shit. So be careful :)

But there's no right or wrong. As long you're in pitch and in rhythm, and your pronounciation is good, you're there!

Use a tuner? If you have any musical instrument, use it as a gauge? But be sure that the instrument you are using is in tune :)

Hmmm, an acoustic version, perhaps?

Good luck! Keep singing :)

I had a listen to your recording.

Pros:
- Your pitch is good, even on high notes. A few notes out of tune but not many (listen to 0:40, slight pitch problem there)
- You're not putting too much weight on the high notes
- Rhythm and timing spot on!

Cons
- No power! Your voice sounds even softer than normal talking.
- No vibrato, which probably indicates some tension in your voice.
- Voice unstable at 0:47 (sounds about to break)

I think it's the lack of power that is the weakest point. But you have to be careful not to introduce tension as you increase power. It's hard for me to make suggestions, as my voice is the opposite of yours - I use too much weight, but you use too little. The advantage of light singing is you already have a huge range, but you really need the power now.

Are there any notes inside your range where you can't sing because your voice is too unstable?

Haha you like power metal yeah?

As far as I know, I feel that your range isn't the same as the original.

You have to mean what you sing too!

Haha you are what you are. As of right now, I think that you have a different range from him. That is neither good nor bad, it's just different. But who knows? You might have a hidden range that can be found through proper coaching.

While it's not THAT possible to increase your range by a huge amount, what's more important is that you improve the quality of the range you have - that's more important.

Keep singing!
