Hmm i recommend a Fender Strat. Quite versatile. Clean, rock anything. As for pedals, try getting a multi-effects so you can have a wide variety of distortions, wah, chorus and so on. I recommend Korg AX1500G.

You wont go wrong with Fender, but at your budget probably a MIJ or MIM. But you will do better with SSH pickup selections. Otherwise, get a normal humbucker and mod them with a push pull pot to split coils.

Efx-wise, get a POD XT 2nd hand or a V-Amp. PM me for the price V-Amp as I know where you can get a very competitive price in SG. POD is nicer though. Both comes with amp modelling so if you're in church like me which is using PA with no 1/2 stacks, you can probably choose an amp model and get a pretty decent sound.

There are others multi efx. Boss GT-6 and ME-50.

i agree. you can't go wrong with fender, s-s-h. or if you want to get a new one, do consider the mid-range Yamaha. they're pretty vesatile, and you can get the pickups changed too. if i'm not wrong, hillsong do use chorus and overdrive. but mostly their guitars are on overdriven clean channels, but not too heavy.

How bout this?

hey, really appreciate you all for taking the trouble to reply. What you say if i get a second hand fender from either peninsular (next to davis) or the bras basah second hand shop on the second storey(maybe third)? there's this quite new place with dark and quaint lighting and they sell mainly harvest acoustics. and second hand electrics and basses. My budget is around 500+. You think i'll be able to get a reasonably good second hand fender with s-s-h configuration? don't know how much i should spend on an effects pedal too. I'm currently playing acoustic, so pardon my dumbness on electric stuff. haha.

Blur

oh ya, about the effects you all mentioned...how much and where would i be able to get them? Second hand is better you reckon? zoom, boss, korg, v-amp,digitech, there are tonnes around. what a headache.

Get a yamaha pacfica 112J. Hmm my friend uses this multi fx thats worth $5000 since its really really old....really nice sound suitable for church music. I think some delay and chorus will do the trick.

The second hand shop at Bras Basah complex is Guitar Workshop. Both Francis and Derrick (the guys who co-own the shop) are Christians but attend different churches. Maybe you can ask them for some advice as to equipment and pedals.

From their latest Hillsongs album, For all You've done, Nigel uses a Gibson Les Paul for the more rock feel songs, eg One Way, Evermore whilst at other times he uses the PRS. You can see all this on the DVD of the same album. Not quite sure what effects he uses. Can't remember whether he uses a Fender at all but will check it out for you. His axe of choice seems to be his PRS, that green one that I see all the time, even when I was at the Hillsongs conference last year. This year is the first time that I see him using a Les Paul.

So I suppose any dual humbucker guitar would do to get the same tone and feel of Nigel's playing. But if you are not familiar with electric guitar. then I suppose a Fender S-S-H would be a safer bet.

For effects, try for a simple distortion and a chorus pedal for a start. These two are the most common pedals use in modern worship. At other times, some just use the amp's gain via the footswitch to add some crunch to the song. Try not to get something too expensive or laden with options as it will confuse and frustrate if you can't get the settings right. You don't want to drown out the singing and you have to mute your playing most of the time if you use a lot of distortion. Start simple and work your way up.

If you have been playing acoustic up till now, then you would have to adjust your playing slighty when playing electric. There are many different techniques in electric guitar playing and because of the set-up and the way the band plays together, you have to be wary of your playng and take note of others. Less is more, of which if you play in a band will soon be your playing motto.

Hey dude,
I actually go to the planet shakers church here in Melbourne, and I've been talking to henry about his rig... you wanna know a secret? the guitar he loves most is his squire telecaster. I'm not joking. He sanded the "squire" tag on the head off and put a sticker that says "Fenar" so people will think it's a fender :) haha. But he has installed a duncan hotrails pickup in the bridge pickup too. So that's his main axe. He also has a gibson les paul that he uses ocassionaly, and he uses a fender fat strat sometimes too (on Open up the gates).

All these guitars are run into a line 6 PodXT pro and in the effects loop he has an ernie ball 6166 volume pedal. And that's it.

I don't know how much experience you've had playing guitar, but I would recommend a fender fat strat (that's the one with humbuckers in the bridge). This is cause it's a good guitar that's versatile enough to handle a lot of music styles. You can play high-gain stuff like most of the planet shakers praise songs coz of the humbucker, and if you want to upgrade it later you can put in some nicer pickups and wire it so u can split the humbucker for that traditional fender strat sound.

:) hope that helps.

Hmm, after the hack in, i think some posts are missing of this thread. Haiz, these people are so terrible.
Yea, anyway, guys, i got myself a second hand korg toneworks AX1000G and was fairly disappointed cos there's a problem with it. or is it a problem with me??? Haha. Cos i haven't gotten my electric guit yet and i was just experimenting around with it. So, i plugged in my accoustic guit into it and err, there was a bad ambient buzz noise that runs on for eternity. Its the kind of noise you get when you plug your instrument into a sound system and then you turn off everything and replug the instrument in to clear the noise. Hmm, don't know if i'm making any sense to you all. But what i notice was that that noise only came, or was significant, when i changed to overdrive or any distortion option. When the guit was in acoustic option, the noise was significantly softer, if not gone. I'm just wondering if the noise is because i'm using an acoustic guit on it. That's my main concern, and if i plug an electric guit into it, would it be okay then? Would the noise be gone? If this is a genuine problem, then i need to find that guy and return it back to him for a refund.

Also, i've been sourcing for an electric guit too. What you guys think of a Silvertone one from davis? Just a little research on the web tells me its a good buy. Any ideas how much they'll cost? the silvertone FASTBACK SFB1, or the SHREDDER AGRESSIVE DOUBLE CUTAWAY, or the REVOLVER, erm, etc. I'm thinking of getting an EPi Les Paul instead though. Any comments? I'm gonna go for cheaper gear first. Don't wanna spend too much. Thanks All!

I think the noise could be due to the acoustic guitar's pickups or to its feedback. It could also be due to the cable or insufficient grounding. Best way to test it is to use an electric guitar as that's what the effects are designed for. I think you will find signicantly less noise with an electric guitar. Get a good cable too, like those from Planet Waves. They would make a wave of difference by cutting down unwanted noise. If problem persists, then go back to the seller and ask them to verify your problem and fix it.

The Epi Les paul would be a good choice if you do not intend to go into heavy duty shredding. Suitable for rock, blues, jass and the occasional metal (not heavy metal though).

yea, thanks! I think its because of my acoustic pickup. I received a mail from adrian who works at music workshop at bras basah. He says they sell imitation strats and lespauls at 200+ and 500+ respectively. What you guys think? I thought an epi LP will cost around 500+ also? then why does the imitation cost around the same? Well, i'll go check it out.

A brand new Epi Les Paul would cost about $600 (list price $750, with 20% off) after discount without a case from Swee Lee.

A Les Paul copy ( we don't call it an imitation as there are differences between it and the original) would costs from about $350 to $500, depending on the model (Standard, Classic or Custom) and the brand. There are good copies and there are better copies. You just have to try them all and decide for yourself.

Guitar Workshop has a Suzuki Les Paul Custom copy that cost about $550. Davis also sells Les Pauls from $350 upwards. Ranking Sports at Bras Basah also retails Les Pauls at prices very similar to Davis.

Bets way is to check a few stores as they carry almost the same brand. If I were you and have the money, I'll get an Epi Les Paul Standard.

If you want a second-hand Les Paul Standard copy, I have one for sale. PM me and I'll give you the details.

I saw a Suzuki Les Paul Custom at Guitar Workshop too. Seems pretty well built although I did not try the guitar.

BTW., how much is Esden Trading (the shop at Sim Lim Square) selling the Suzuki Les Paul? Is a Standard, Classic (with open coil humbukcers), or a Custom (with ffancier binding and in-lays in head and neck)?

at that time when i was gonna buy my digicam , i could not tell the diff of standard custom and stuff...only recently Subversion explained about the bindings and stuff.

The suzuki les paul is $500 i think.

Thanks for the infor. Was just comparing prices with the Suzuki Les Paul from different retailers. Seems to be about the same price.

Suzuki Les Paul

Hello,

Adrian from Guitar Workshop here.

Suzuki Guitars are actually made in Korea from the same factory as Epiphone.

Therefore, it is essentially an Epiphone. Only difference is the pickups.

Personally, I prefer the Suzuki Strats cus' basically I'm a Strat player and I feel it is more versatile than the LP.

Adrian
