CSI Workshop Redux!

Wow.

Sweet setup there. Stunning collection of cymbals to go with, as well. Really dig it. I've been snooping around and you're the cymbalholic of Singapore eh? Great stuff there buddy.

How does the flats sound though. I've thought about getting them arbiter flats before, but it's a risk I wouldn't take up at the moment because I know nuts about it, plus it's pretty pricey eh?

Cheers you guys, great to see the local drumming scene so actively meeting up and sharing with each other.

Wah DH, how can say like that.

I was there taking Photos - to be posted up here later. How I really wish the Chairman"no need to work" man kekekeke.. I was running here and there, collecting forms, soft copy of logos to Thumbdrive, telephone call/sms very busy each day laising with people who are invole to get the MembershipForms/Card/Venue done propely as there are alot of small small issue & things. (high HP Bill somemore). Bro Alfe also almost wanna die liao. Being a Committee Member of DXS is - really HardWork and I know you Bros/Sis really work so hard and took out your precious personal time for it......my respect to you all...and thanks

PS: - DH - Let's start a Thread called (Whatever deem fit since you're the Cymbal-Expert here) - but this will be Cymbals-Rejuvenating eg things on Drilling Holes, Hammering (which is hard/tough - there is a certain Principle here in Hammering), Lathering (where we need Anvil and a Machine), Ageing the Cymbals, Oxidising etc......I mean - Let's plan to get all the info on this to this Thread - Then We will think of a Way - to get the $$$$ later - Start a Cymbal-Workshop (a real-one) where we can modified Cymbals for DXS Members....Start now as we can have it by next year 2008 hopefully.

Nancy... I got the Purecussion without hearing it because it was from DW as we know its reputation. To me it is a great kit. Those who were there at my place should give their comments.

Alfe... share your thoughts... you commented the kit beating some other kits hands down?

I may be getting a used Arbiter flats next month, put it into tip top condition and let those who are considering getting it to try...

RD... just joking lah... some of us know you and alfe are working very hard in the background and we appreciate it :)

hehe... of course dh was joking... eric work the hardest out of all of us... his title shld be changed to 'work-till-drop member of drum xchange singapore'

i will probably need to spend more time to give a thorough review of the purecussion, here's my thoughts on it for now:

at first listen, the toms sound like timpanis as if they were without the bowl shells. because of its resonance and long sustain, gentle playing gives people the feeling of warmth. the low-end is reminiscent of the kind you get from large african mahogany shells without some of the shell overtones.

for the bass drum. when some of the softies played, where i was sitting, i was quite pleasantly surprised by the kick properties. its very possible to engineer a pretty good kick sound out of it. its deep and lacking wood-shell warm, i like it and think it will be great for jungle music, or club music that requires generic kick sound that includes pop/hiphop/rnb played with studio mix arrangements

basically, u'd never get a "shell" sound out of it but thats beside the point. with some experimenting on mic-ing, you'd fool many a regular audience into thinking this was a large and deep, sweet-sounding drumkit.

many of drumkit mic-ing techniques at regular top40s clubs here also usually try to capture a basic skin-based tone and add to the mix from there. its very possible that purecussion toms and bass drum can replace a regular kit in such situations.

cheers

Bro DH - Can donate your Kit to our Museum DXS Museum kekeke (joking) - The Kit is nice, too good to be true.....I was amazed that it sounded so good.

sounds pretty good, the flats.

there's this dude selling off his arbiter pro kit for $1.1k, which is more than reasonable, imo. however, it doesnt come with a gigbag or transporter bag, which i thought would be cool cos then i'd be able to bring the kit around for say, gigs or jams.

purecussion has been discontinued, am i right? so the thing now is whether to get the flats from arbiter or traps.

this is feedback from someone still wet behind the ears: the Purecussions actually sounded pretty good. i can't describe the feeling/sound as well as plainsman did. but from a beginner's standpoint, i must say, it all felt and sounded good. well, actually if i were behind the kit, the bass sounded a bit flat and weak, but those in front said it sounded fine, even loud. plus hey, spend a little more now, and save in the future when you only need to replace 1 head per drum, have less to polish and clean, and have less heads to tune. plus, yes, setting up and transporting would be way easier eh?

seriously, now i know why d_h can practice at 2am and not get calls from the men in blue

Thanks again to drum_hobbyist for kindly welcoming us into your home and letting us play with your awesome toys. Those who didn't go, tsk tsk...sorry for spoiling the market lah...we thrashed the place so bad...now d_h is considering charging future visitors...hahah!!

oh yes, nancyYOU, it seems Traps is a better quality kit than Arbiter. even someone who was trying to sell off his Arbiter kit (not the softie) told me honestly that Traps was a better buy. but this is just what i found from surfing around lah, i'm not FOR Traps, per se.

i like e flats alot. only issue i have is e limitations of the bass drum. it sounds so.. THUDD!. i dunno whether the bass drum can be tuned such that there is more resonance or sound richer or not haha. like more depth. and versatility. haha

i dunno how to explain :X haha

KB and RD: thanks for the photos :)

RD: we all can work towards hammering and machining. Lets go down to your FIL workshop and check out the possibilities.

Snow and Plainsman: appreciate your comments and kind words.

Nancy: Purecussion is discontinued. Personally, i will go for Traps over Arbiter.

Melvin: the bass drum can be tuned to have more boom. I settle for 'thudd' is for practical reasons.

For all those who came, it was my pleasure to have you in my home. The next CSI should be 1 May 08.

okay i'm there for the next one.

this one looked like so much fun. bah.

and snowflier played on the kit!

Fuman, my FIL the machine are quite large in fact too large for Lathering (not that they cannot - They can I believed). I saw somewhere (can't remember though) that Cymbal Lathering Maschine are not very big and they have something that lock the cymbal from the Key-Hole.

DO you have a pictures and contact on this? - - - Ok I started a Thread call Hand-Hammering and Recreating Cymbals here...you head it ok ...let's make it real oneday that we havge our own workshop at DXS where we can do all these all by ourself - This is a very interesting activity enhancing our Drumming Hobby beside just Playing.

Cheers
