I am interested to pick up bass and I know only some basic stuffs like positioning the guitar and my hand on the neck.I don't know the placement of fingers for strumming as I heard guitars and bass have different techniques on positions.I heard the you put the thumb on the pickup for the topmost string.for the 2nd string, your thumb on the first string.and so on.

The alphabet for each string I haven't even remembered. So please help me on this.

What exactly do you need help on?

The strings config for four string basses is E-A-D-G, if that's what you're asking for.

left hand technique: proper thumb placement is the middle of the back of the neck. forefingers should be arched over the fretboard. you should be pressing the string just behind the fret.

right hand technique: the most conventional method of playing is with two fingers over the top of the strings, playing with your middle and index fingers. your wrist should be in the most natural position possible, it should not be bent unnaturally. if possible, you should not bend your wrist at all. you do not need to rest your thumb anywhere. if you can train yourself to let your right hand float over the strings without resting on anything, it will be the best. that is what i do now.

many pros may not do this. but many players pick up bad habits while learning, which they don't deny and can't eradicate.

basically you dont strum bass - you pick bass notes most of the time, as bass & guitar serve different purposes.

you can either:
1) use thumb to thumb the strings
2) or use index finger to hook strings
3) or use index and middle fingers to alternatively pick bass lines
4) or use (thumb), index, middle and ring fingers to pick lines (like guitar!)
5) or use a guitar pick to pick bass lines
6) or tap the notes on finger/fret board

Can also try read up at url link below, keep on practicing and good luck!
Cheers

The term "Plucking" is often used to describe the action of the fingers on your other hand as they "Pluck" each string in order to create a sound. While some bassist may use a Pick to play the strings, the most common form of bass playing is done with the fingers directly. While there are certainly much more advanced plucking techniques to be learned in the future, here is a basic description of how to start plucking the bass strings:
