Clueless abt keyboards!!!

Hi!!! To all keyboard pros out there and all keyboardists of soft, what advice would you give for a pianist who wants to know more about keyboards..How can I improve my techniques as a keyboardist playing styles are quite different from that of a pianist...This is because as I've discovered recently playing keyboards in a band is a total different matter from playing as a pianist for that same song..

Hi, your question can be broken down into a 2 parts:

1. Playing solo keyboard vs playing in a band
2. Playing different sounds using the keyboard

Before answering that 2 questions (and giving other keyboardists a chance to answer before me), could you specify what you meant by playing the same piece is different when you play in a band and when you play piano? Do you mean playing solo piano vs playing in a band, or do you mean playing a piano vs other electronic keyboards (both in a band setting) are different?

Ok, guess my qn was also not very clear. I'm comparing between playing piano VS electronic keyboards in a band setting. I'm unsure about how to play accompaniment to support the band (bassist,guitarist) during certain parts of the song. Like for example, there are certain parts when a keyboardist has to do some melody and come up, and in parts like chorus or verses, just play chords and do some accompaniment. Maybe because I have been trained classically and whenever I play a song by ear, I try to figure out the chords first (for the left hand) and then fit in the melody (for right hand).
