Choosing an electric guitar

I have been playing an acoustic guitar for a while like 6 months or so. My skills are still mediocre but at least I could play songs compared to 6months ago. But I play mostly open chords and so my level is still somewhat at beginner.

Recently, I have been very interested in all the cool sounds the electric guitar could do and is having thoughts to get one. However, I am not sure how to choose an electric guitar.

How do I judge the sound of an electric guitar and is the quality of the sound from the guitar itself or the amplifier? What range of electric guitars should I be look at? That is not the $1000 type, reasonable cost, with a tremolo that I can experiment with, sound quality that will keep my interest going on.

I also saw many amps and some has features like "effects" while others don't have. Would these "effects" on the amp be often used? Are these effects worth for that additional price? I am playing it at home and so a small amp should be sufficient right?

Thanks! :D

start with a starter pack - e.g the squier or washburn packs etc - comes with gitar, amp, cables, soft case etc etc ... value for $$$$$

I have seen the starter pack but are the items that come with it worth? The guitar bag is like amost "protectionless". Just a cloth bag. And I don't need some of the things that they come with like what instructional DVD, chord book all these.

That's why I thought I might as well put the money into a better guitar that will keep my interest going on.

Whether you use the effects depend on your style of music. The most commonly used would be the distortion. Others include the flange, phaser, chorus and delay.

I saw a Marshall 10w amp yesterday for $115. But it has no effects. Just a normal amp. There is another amp that I don't know what brand. It has a "B" logo that cost $110 but has all the effects and 15w. What's the difference between the 2? How come the "B" logo amp has all effects and 15w yet cheaper than the branded Marshall amp that has no effects and only 10w?

I am trying to keep my budget less than $400 if possible.

I feel like i'm working for Citymusic with all this free advertising :P

For 400, the best you can get is to go down to Citymusic and try their inhouse brand name called Craftsman, it seems that its a good guitar though i've never tried it based on peoples opinion.
Aside from that you also get a Line 6 Amp, which to me sounds relatively good.

The problem with Starter Pakcs is that they give you most of the time a shit amp, so no problems here :)

Well, the amp's sound. You can get a TGM or Smarvo 50 watt amp for around 200 bucks, or you could get a Marshall 15 watt with effects for the same price. And damn, no one in their right mind would get the Smarvo or TGM amps. The sound quality is vastly inferior, imo. I'm not saying Marshall is the best, there are other value-for-money ones. But Marshall is one of the best. You could try Sound Drive, NuX, Marshall...
Well. I'd get a KGarage guitar and a NuX Mighty 15 if i were you.
Budget brands: KGarage, Craftsman, Swing... These are really good stuff, bang for the buck.
The not so great ones, must check piece by piece, would be J&D, TGM, SX... So brand does actually play a part, but more likely it differs piece by piece.

FOR GUITAR ALONE u CUD SCORE A MEX FENDER STAT OR TELE 2ND HAND .. WITH AGGRESSIVE BARGAINIng...

Or can just get a copy-sound wise and make, some sound as good as the original... I'm talking about brandless copies here though. Not mass-made copies... Is just, for Fender, part of what you're paying for is the brand.

cudnt agree wt u more bro -

to each their own lah .... but i stopped buying fenders a long time ago .... nowdays I just diy

bro fgl, you use custom parts, like from warmoth? Or off the shelf parts? I tried one project, off the shelf parts. Sounded okay, but with the money and time put in, i might as well get a factory made one. Maybe it's cause i'm new to this area...
Used a basswood body from byleft, one of Davis's neck, and the rest of the parts from guitar workshop... Like the pickups, pots, caps, etc.

You can also try Timbre guitars from SV, if you're interested. I believe Mike sells 'em in starter packs too, and they're well within your budget, i think you'll have enough cash left over to get a heavily padded gigbag.. Go look at the Timbre SR200, IMHO its THE best sounding budget guitar out there, better than the Craftsmans, SXs, Washburns out there. The build quality is really immaculate too.

The starter pack at SV comes with the Sound Drive amp. Is it the amp any good? Does it sound brightly or dull and muddy? BTW, the starter pack cost how much?

Comparing the Timbre with the Ibanez GRX150, which one is better in terms of sound and guitar quality? Their price is about the same. And is the timbre bridge a floating one that I can fix a whammy bar at?

yea I normally get fender licensed parts - i.e it would compatible with each other ... e.g are warmoth, all parts, wd & mighty mite...

the non licensed parts many a time will have major fit or compatibility problems

Craftsman are also made in China, so Craftsman and Timbre are almost on the same level. The only difference is that Craftsman's models are listed on City Music's website and we all know it to be City Music's in-house brand. As for Timbre, I don't know if it's Standard Value's in-house brand or not, and there is no website either. On that front, I'd rather go with Craftsman, except on the occasion I'm looking at a strat, which is when I'd turn to the SR200. I've played it and although I don't know how it compares with Craftsman, it sure beats any Squier hands-down.

Davis offers 199-325 for starter packs, brands like ESP around 325 with amp, guitar, cable, bag, few picks and tuner
