choosing amp!

i'm planning on getting an amp, but i'm not sure on what amp to get greatly because i'm not particularly knowledgeable abt amps, all the tubes stuff and such. i've got a budget of around 200 bucks, and i need a good practice amp of 15 watts. i'm considering a roland cube 15, a marshall MG15-CDR, and a line6 spider II 15. i would like to know which is a better offer in terms of durability and sound... can u guys help me? or if u guys have any better recommendations pls intro to me also thanks! but make sure they stay within my budget!

They are all quite durable solidstates.

Soundwise, bring your guitar, try out and listen to the amps with your ears. Choose the one you like. None of them are particularly spectacular for an 8", and none of them are below average either. It's all a matter of taste.

hmmm... heard vox pathfinders arent bad. itachi, my budget is around $200, not exceeding $250. i play mostly rock and metal.

I think a great amp for the price would be the smarvo 40 watter which can be had for under $200. However the overdrive channel leaves much to be desired hence a distortion pedal would be required to supplement. The cleans on this amp is spectacular though and the eq works well! Comes with in-built reverb function.

Another great practice amp brand would be the behringer GM-108 for $138 at luther's or even better if can top up $50 it would be the GM-110 30 watter for $250. Both are great analog modelling amps which gives the branded stuff a run for their money. Ah do also try out the behringer AC108 tube for $135 which has a 12AX7 tube in its preamp. I dunt noe how this one sounds so please update me about it!

I've personally tried my custom 22 thru the Smarvo and behringer GM-108 and results are spectacular for the price of the amp!

Anyway, what type of amp are you looking for? A modelling amp? Or just a simple 2 channel amp?

the GM110 is very nice to try out and consider. The built in distortion looks and sounds eeriely like a Sansamp  but then it's Behringer.. no surprises.

hmmm... so whatever it is i still have to personally to go down and test out the sound ya... but at least i've been told that i should stay away from spider II. heh. thanks. i'll consider the behringer amp u guys recommended! thanks.

anyway, whats a modelling amp and whats a simple 2 channel amp?

A modelling amp is one that has emulations of other well known amp models. Whereas a 2 channel amp, is usually an amp that has a Clean channel or a OD/Dist channel. The cube15 and spider are modelling amps, whereas the Mg15cdr is a 2 channel amp.

As for trying, u should try really, cos ultimately u will be the one playing the amp, u wouldnt want to buy something u regret, would u? If u are apprehensive about trying, u can always ask the sales person to try it out for you.

so in other words, a modelling amp would be more versatile? and i've just read up abt the behringer GM-108, it seemed pretty decent for its price :P

icic. but cube 30 is kinda way out of budget... any amps with good built-in distortion or overdrive which are within my budget? lol

Marshall MG15CDR! I like Marshall amp's distortion...not sure if it's different from each amp but the last time I tried a MG10, I liked the sound of it...the tone was about the same as the 400+ Marshall I tried at Davis, haha...

haha. i'm really confused on which amp to go for already. kinda interested in the mg15cdr also. at least its got the spring reverb. any comments on the mg15cdr from its users?

hi doom..

i recommend the behringer gm110 too.. it has a 10inch speaker with nice overdrive/distortions tones... i own one before.. u can try it out at luther.. it cost 250 new i think.. forget abt lookin for it 2nd hand.. unlikely to get one unless your lucky.. people move away once they hear the brand behringer.. go have a try of those amp suggested and see what suits you..

Hi there 8)

i'm with the Cube30 but that's off limits to you, yes?

the MG15 is surprisingly a good amp to start with, i favour its drive tones better than the MG30. the Cube15 has drive options for you so you have choices when you play but i deem them rather lacking compared to the Cube30. scout for a used unit, it's worth the while.

hmmm... icic. so now i've got the choices... the behringer gm110, the mg15cdr... and hunt for a used cube 30? haha. anyway, i've discovered that other than the mg15cdr, theres a similar 1 called mg15dfx with quite a few run of effects available, how is that as compared to the mg15cdr? is it available anywhere in any shops? cuz i remember only seeing mg15cdr when i went over to peninsular
