hi, i'll be having my prom on the 7th dec and my A levels will separate now and the 7th. i need some advice on what songs should my band choose to get through the auditions, something that'll impress.

fyi, we just formed and have not played together as a band yet. but have heard each other play on separate occasions and all have our skills in place. we're a 4piece band: 2guitarists, 1 bass/vocals and 1 drummer.

should we play blues/rock/whatever genre? example of songs?

if you haven't played together before, don't choose a challenging song. it's not about how well you play, it's about crowd engagement and musical communication. just choose something simple on the top 40s.

Slow dancing is fantastic.
Not exactly the perfect prom song but it's a beautiful one nonetheless.

If you guys do play it, record it please. I'd love to see how you guys do (;

All The Small Things by Blink-182..
easiest song you could ever play, and still nice to the ears

you could play a song by Blink-182, because if you pick the right songs, they have a perfect sound and playing method for a newly formed band such as yourselves. Very easy to coordinate. If you want for a 4-piece band, try some Linkin Park, because from what i heard a lot of they're songs are in standard tuning with uniform chord progression.

good luck for your prom. ;D

You should try boyslikegirls. Personally there is this band at my brother's prom that did Holiday and Thunder. These two songs kinda get the crowd's attention. All the best to your band and to your A levels. Cheers

haha thanks for the replies and suggestions guys. we're considering knocking on heaven's door, the gnr version. shouldnt be a problem right? but for the audition, simple=good? if cant play tight enough for the tough songs, scared that we'll just blow our chances.

honestly, i've never played blink182 stuff before (im a guitarist). should be just basic power chords right?

and to vicko, if we manage to get past the auditions and play at the real thing, slow dancing is a must! i got the jm strat for a reason.

Knocking and heavens door and slow dancing are both great songs, would really like to see a video of you guys playing it, however the GnR version of the song is quite powerful, can your vocalist handle it?

haha play some mainstream stuff? most of the people listen to mainstream music... and if you play some music that are unknown to them, they might just boo you and ask "what kind of shit were you playing just now?"

Just a suggestion: I would suggest you not follow the GNR version of Knockin' on Heaven's Door completely. That version has been covered to death. Besides, the later bits after the breakdown with the gospel piano and choir are hard to replicate without a keyboardist and with only one vocalist.

Try your own arrangement lah. Firstly, it's a very flexible song, and it's always easier to remember a song and get tight when you came up with the arrangement rather than learning and memorizing it. Secondly, bonus creativity points. Thirdly, your vocalist is definitely no Axl Rose...
