Cheap and good bass for beginners

and while i'm here i will answer your question
Ibanez is usually carried by swee lee but there are small amounts everywhere. i know standard value has the GSR200 but it costs $440. so i don't know how 'tight' your budget is.
but its a cool bass nevertheless. i would consider it mid range though not really beginner. (as in price wise, beginners can play Warwicks if they want to.. lol)
other brands you can look out for would be SX, Craftsman, Stagg and Timbre.
if you want branded abit, must pay more naturally, then you can look at Squire, Ibanez, OLP.
soft has a great 2nd hand market too~!! (gets my vote.. haha)
similarly, you can look at those jumpstart packages offered by the various brands, they come with everything a beginner would need.

My good piece of advice.. 
As an experienced bassist, I find the Crafterman and SX the best value for money and tone. Even at my level, I still think these 2 brands sound decently good. My recommendation is that you get either of these brands which usually come in a "beginners" package.. and spend more/the rest of the money left on a more powerful bass amp to get the sound/satisfaction.. to avoid the frustration of the small watt amps not giving enough Oomph or the sound cracks cos the amp cannot take it(in term of insufficient frequency band or the low wattage that doesnt allows anything decent to sound normally good)
These days, bass amps are getting cheaper... get those Roland Micro Amp also can get something decently good for its price. Dont settle for bad sound which is what kills and end alot of beginners who finally gave up cos they got so bored of it..(more like bored of the lack of tone and complete-ness of dynamic sound)

Hi guys, I'm venturing into the bass world now and let's just say I'm getting excited by them all.
I only have a budget of around $400 for the guitar itself, and I'm thinking of getting a 2nd hand Squier Jazz Bass from one of nice Softies here. Is that a wise choice or should I get a new 1st hand bass?
