Changing tuners

I've got a gibson sg special that i've had for some time, and i'm thinking of changing the tuners. The guitar would go out of tune if you'd just look at it. Read some reviews of the guitar online and quite a number of owners mentioned the tuners were problematic as well.

Any suggestions? Grover, gotoh, sperzel? Also which shop would you go to get this done?

Yeah id like to know the tuners also,.. i have an 80s gibson studio, and the tuners are like slowly crapping out,.. doesnt hold tuneing very well,... the tuner brand is gibson deluxe, thinking of getting klusons,.. how much is it in singapore ,.. n which shop is selling,..

I believe the tuning problem could be partly due to the SG's weak neck, joined at the 21st fret or so, compared to other guitars like the strat and les paul which are joined at around the 18th fret.

So its kinda unstable and even reported to have moved slightly....causing detuning of strings.

But some of my friends do not have this problem so far with their SG standards. so guess its a few of those who gets it.

Changing tuners or machineheads could help a little, but the problem still boils down to the neck.

Do ask a luthier to check it out for you, and access the problem. But then again i may be wrong, don't panic yet.

It depends on which model of SG. Standard is joined at the 19th fret. My 61" Reissue is at the 21th fret. But I have to agree the neck is unsteady.

Try the Guitar Connection at Exclesior Shopping Centre. They are located just across from Davis. In fact, you just have to walk through this passage way at the side of Davis and you're there. Look for Kelvin. I just spoke to him recently regarding changing my tuners to Grovers for my Epi Les Paul. They cost about $75, while labour costs about $30. He can order the tuners if you want them. He also does guitar repairs and set-up.

i changed my epi tuners to grover deluxe at guitar connection.. friendly guy and the change cost around $100 too.. the korean tuners had different hole size from the US grovers so the holes had to be filled and redrilled

Hmm, the guy running Guitar Connection (I think his name is Kelvin?) looks familiar... was he from Guitar Workshop, located at Ming's Arcade, near Hard Rock cafe?
