Changing from 9s to 10s

hi im planning to change my string gauges.Is there any precautions i should take?
Will changing it warp the neck?It an ibanez prestige.thx

You need to set up your guitar to gauge 10.

just need to loosen the truss rod a little and set the innotation right..

ibanez is set with a set of .009 by default, less the recent models (selected). with any increase in tension, there is a need to be wary of neck warp but this won't be detrimental. if you don't know how to address this, best to bring it to someone who does.

If you ask me.. Safest bet is to get it setup. Especially if it has a tremolo unit. On a hardtail unit, you can go from 9s to 10s without setup, but a more drastic change definitely needs a setup. Generally, my rule of thumb is, if you wanna change gauges, avoid possible trouble and get it setup for that gauge before putting the strings on.

You should actually tighten the truss rod if you go from 9s to 10s

You loosen when you go down gauges.

actually, just straying off a little, when i got my first guitar (Cort x-9) and didnt know anything about truss rods, neck tensions or innotation, i experimented from gauge light 9s to jazzy 13s without any problem with the guitar neck. and i didnt know all those rules about only changing changing 1 string at a time so the neck wont warp... that was about 6-7 years ago and the guitar is still playing fine now, although i wouldnt try that again with my current guitars.

anyway, i made a mistake.. yup lightice is right, should tighten instead of loosen.

From .009 to just .010? Just change it and rock on. No need to worry a damn thing about warped neck and stuff. Tension change is too minimal, unless you jump to .11 or higher. After all, it's just one string. Eh, you are not changing the whole set rite? :???:

Another thing to consider is your tuning. Even with heavier gauges, the lower your tuning, the lesser you need to worry about your neck. I'm using .012-.056 (EB Not Even Slinky) on my Schecter C-1 and it's tuned either in drop Bb (Bb F Bb Eb G C) or drop C (C G C F A D). The neck is still straight as it is supposed to be.

must to restring 1 by 1? I've been taking it all off before changing for quite some years and intonation is acceptable. kind of find it hard to clean the grime etc. guess i should adopt this good habit.

Going off topic...
Lets say you jump from 9s to a much heavier gauge. What about the nut?
Must change or not? Or do some adjustments?

the adjustments required are rather minimal but necessary for your guitar to be at it's optimal setup always.

it is best to send it down to a tech because doing these adjustments can be quite troublesome and very time consuming even though it sounds like an easy thing to do.

For the nut its not required to change for changing up or down 1 gauge. The nut slots are usually large enough to accommodate 1 gauge up.

You can also get the nut slotted once the current one wears out. Or if you're going to change to a bone nut.
