think you should learn to change yourself. because

1) its quite easy

2) its a useful skill to have. sometimes u break a string somplace where u need to change on the spot

ok, i´ll learn it myself, beside the string, any other equipment i need to use? thanks for the reply!

listen to boo- string changing is a DIY affair. besides, i don´t see the point of you lugging your guitar to the shops ($$$ spent on transport + effort) & paying (again $$$) the bloke to change your guitar strings. i´d be happy to see you actually spend this time playing your guitar

in order to help you change strings, the following gadgets will be handy to own:

*tuner- doesn´t matter what tuner, just get one. a decent, cheap one i know goes for $19.90

*string winder

*clippers- to quickly cut off excess string length at the headstock.

Hi there!

You could get all your stuffs from any music store. I think the cheapest would be Swee Lee. go to the one in Bras Basah Complex in Bugis. They have better service then da Aljunied one. Or you can go to Luthermusic in IMM. Music Plaza in Plaza Singapura.

but Swee Lee offers the stuffs at a cheaper rate, at least 10-20 percent difference.

You actually can do without the string winder, juz wind with ur fingers, it´ll take longer but wat for waste that few bucks on da winder =x

As for Tuners, it´s better to get a Good one that´ll last you. Check out http://www.luthermusic.com/cgi-bin/WB_OfferPageGen.pl <-- there´s a Seiko tuner cheap! or Swee Lee´s range of Seiko tuners. The ST808 is not bad bout $32 @ bras basah.

Strings : Juz get a normal kind cheap cheap liek D´Addario XL bout $6. I recommend Xtra Light Guage strings (xtra thin) as it´ll be easier for you to play when you´re juz beginning. Easier bending etc.

As for the pain... i´m sorry but everyone who started off guitaring would have to endure the pain. You could start with Nylon strings (classical guitar) then progress to Steel Strings acoustic/electric. that way, you´ll adapt easier. Otherwise, juz endure! When your finger tips start to form "corns" callouses, that´ll be the time you´ll not feel da pain. It´ll be numb

But until then, persevere! Take Care!! Guitars RULE!

Cheers

using the string-winder is really subjective. i feel awful for recommending because i don´t use it...
icon_wink.gif
i started out not using one so i won´t start using one...

that painful finger thing- it´s a passing phase once you get used to playing. you´ll suddenly realize that you don´t have to press down hard to make some noise
icon_razz.gif
if you play an electric with lots of gain, all the more, you shouldn´t press down hard...

Changing strings is actually quite simple. It´ll be good for one to learn to do it, rather than spend money unneccessarily.

One thing to note is the winding of the string ends at the pegs. It´s important to keep the strings neatly stacked. In other words, strings should not cross over itself on the peg. This helps to keep the strings in tune.

After passing thru the slot, wind the first half round beneath the open end of the string, then the next round, wind it on top. Thereafter, continue to wind the rest of the string beneath. This should be the only place where the string will cross over itself!

Personally, I dun like the idea of bending the string back onto itself, as illustrated at the above website. Bending strings at sharp angles, like the case above, will cause more breakages.

Also, try not to wind too little or too much. Too little and the strings won´t stay in tune. Winding too much will force the strings to cross over each other when space runs out. This crossing over will cause the strings to ´jump´ out of tune when the tension builds up. And it´s ugly, too.

Lastly, expect to tune a few times before the strings stay in tune. The strings need to be stretched before they will stay in tune. You can stretch the strings by pulling the strings LIGHTLY with your finger, pulling at intervals from the bridge all the way to nut, to ensure even stretching.

Just my 2 cents worth!
