Change of 100/120V Power Transformer (PT) in Guitar Amplifier to 220/240V

Hi bros and sis,

I am considering of changing the PT of my amp from 100/120V to 220/240V so I don't have to use an external step-down transformer anymore.
Anyone did this before?

I have a few questions.
1) Where did you get it changed? Names and contacts?
2) How long does it take to change it and how much does it cost you?
3) Any side effects? Any noticeable change in terms of tone or performance of your amp?
4) If I change the PT, must I change the Output Transformer (OT) as well?
5) What Power Transformer and Output Transformer did you use? Mercury Magnetics or is there any other recommended transformers?

Anyone care to enlighten me? Your help is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

My electronics may suck but I don't think its possible. The components in your amp will blow, don't think changing the transformer alone will do.

1) Where did you get it changed? Names and contacts?

Any shop that does amp repair will be able to do it

2) How long does it take to change it and how much does it cost you?

Should be at least $100 and above, depending on the tranny you want.
Some tranny have dual voltage and do not actually need to be replaced, but rewired etc

3) Any side effects? Any noticeable change in terms of tone or performance of your amp?

Non if the transplant is properly done

4) If I change the PT, must I change the Output Transformer (OT) as well?

No need to change OT

5) What Power Transformer and Output Transformer did you use? Mercury Magnetics or is there any other recommended transformers?

You need a tranny that will have the same sec voltages
as the sec voltage of the original tranny with a stepdown
to maintain the same operation as the amp was designed.
You can change to other voltage if you know wat you are doing.
( this would then be considered a modified, running higher or lower voltages )

Brand is just a brand... the specs must be correct.

I am not electronically qualified.
Please take the abv as free advice : )

will be helpful if you posted wat amp we are talking abt here

actally, you can go ahead and change, shouldnt have problem. as long as
step down Volt/current matches.

i did it for my Cd players, record player, audio power amp itself

no problem.

go ahead and change .

I guess you just have to make sure that the output from the replacement transformer matches the output of the original transformer, so that the components receive the same amount of juice regardless of transformer.

Any guitar/amp tech can do it.

The issue is not whether can do it or not.
The issue is whether a proper replacement can be found.

Like what the prev poster said, brand is brand.
The specs MUST be right.

Household names like Fender/Marshall/Vox, replacement PTs are
easier to find. If you plan on switching voltage on a peavey 5150,
mesa or H&K, then it gets trickier
