CD Shops… Still There?

Digital technology has certainly revolutionized many things. One such item is recorded music, in this case I am referring to Compact Disc. The younger generation may not have much memories of this storage media because MP3 has been their staple in terms of recorded music. Surely, music shops that sell CDs are hit hard by the alternative to obtaining music, that is by "downloading". In a short span, many CD shops have closed because of "downloading" of music.

In this natural selection process, only those who remain relevant survive the onslaught. Memphis Music is one of those. This CD shop has amazing titles that are rare. For those who are not into the Top 40s, it will be a treat if you check out this CD shop. I have interviewed the owner of Memphis Music, Mr. Ho about his thoughts on the changes to music industry and the fate of CD shops. Here is the interview article about this unique CD shop: http://cadam7777777.blogspot.com/2013/11/cd-shops-still-there.html

Come on, other than MP3, CDs are as cool. If you have not, go to Excelsior Shopping Centre's basement and you will find Mr. Ho there.

When I last left Singapore CD shops were on their knees. I'm not surprised that a few more have closed down since then.

My favourite CD shops were all the karang gunis, especially cash converters. If you know what you're looking for, you can usually go there and scour the entire shop, and you might find 4 or 5 CDs that you like. There's also a shop on the nth floor of some factory near Tai Seng MRT - Red Dot or something. And a few stores away from Roxy in Peninsular plaza there was a guy who was selling used CDs.

And here's a shameless plug for myself. I've about to come back from overseas and I have a lot of CDs that some of you might like. I'm only going to deal with this over ebay, and all these are only going to be up for a limited time, because I'm going to land, send everything out, and then get out. But I'm sure that you will find something that you like. Everything is reasonably priced. I have indie, oldies, rap, even a few metal CDs. Please have a look:

Man, I can't do without CDs. Even the MP3s I have were ripped from CDs I own. Nothing in this downloadable format compares to opening the actual disc for the first time, flipping through the little booklet inside, looking through the lyrics while listening to the songs etc... There's also more information about the band and instruments they use, I personally like to read the band members' "Thank You" messages to people who contributed to the album. They have collectors' appeal too, giving a sense of satisfaction to the owner who collected his/her favourite bands entire anthology of albums!

When the CD ends, I actually enjoy the process of changing discs manually! Properly good CDs sound much better too; better clarity, fullness, depth, sound imaging and overall balance. I've got a hi-fidelity version Dio's Holy Diver album on a 24k Gold disc, remastered for audiophile presentations. Playing it loud at night with the lights off is truly like a Rainbow in the Dark!! Also have countless jazz CDs of similar, or even better audio resolution costing between $35 - $50 each.

If you enjoy listening to music, it has to be through proper CDs or vinyl. The MP3/4 formats cannot ever offer the same type of experience as the proper hard copies. Sad to see CD shops dropping like flies all over Singapore. Get most of my stuff online these days...
