Career in Music

I tried, didn't work out good in my personal opinon.

Would rather stick to doing business for the income and fuelling music as a passion.

Hi i dunno whether to hijack this thready. I do have a same interest as TS. But im a little diff. Perhaps u guys big bros suggest somethings. Since ppl close to me arent musically talented enuff to give me opinions...

Im already 23, graduating soon, my part time IT degree,n having a stable job n income.
Im taking this grade 5 theory exam this mar 15. Currently im doing my grade 5 classical pianoas well, and finishing soon, jumping to grade 6. Just started piano last yr. I m aso in the choir since 12, till now, minus 2 yrs in NS. Wld be joining the SSO choir after graduating the stupid night class.

So i hv thot many times abt doing music as a career. Is it possible ? Tats why im currently doing the pianos studies. I thought... once i attain grade8, the least i could do is to teach at some music schs on wkends i guess. Had i not visited this thread i didnt lasalle also offer music courses ! (i thot NAFA's music dip/degree was better.)

So let me guess some of the possible jobs in sg we could do. Teaching classical/pop piano, guitar, teach singing in those chinese pop singing schs (wat cert we need ? Vocal dip ABRSM ?), being a music teacher in MOE, working in mediacorp or some studios that does recording... Any more suggestions ?

N apart from that are the usual gigs, performing in bars, pubs. which i doubt u can do permanently or fix.

So what do u all think ?

so for example if i want to take jazz guitar u dont need abrsm grade? cos like abrsm dont have practical for jazz guitar..only classical

If i didnt see wongly, you will need a ABRSM Theory Grade 6 or from trinity hall grade 6.

ANd u need a practical grade 8 in ur instrument.

Also, although jazz's practical n classical are different, u shld noe ur music theory, in general, regardless of ur genre. Without this knowledge, u cant read classical, jazz, pop, regardless their instrument the score is written for.

Also the grade 5 tested materials are very very basic. Kids at primary sch are learning that u noe.

Have a look, Guitar ABRSM Graded exam:
http://www.abrsm.org/resources/guitarSyllabusComplete07.pdf

I feel that these ABRSM certs are useless. They serve as a guage, as well as a progressive difficulty for those who wish to learn this instrument. But nevertheless the world judge base on certs, although there are ppl who r successful without them.

IMHO: It's all about practicing and that dash of talent. Then building contacts and networking comes in. I strongly feel that certs and qualifications are nothing but a piece of pulp when it comes to the creative industry.

Till one reaches the basic requirements of being an able musician, whether the sessioning, teaching, nights, rock star whatsoever sort of musician -- getting the technicalities securely down at least -- I think there's no point to try doing it for a living because you are going to struggle with the many, many other sound (v.) musicians around in this already-tiny music industry.

Unless you want to chari makan and teach kids who are none the wiser, but I honestly don't think too highly of people who do that. :)

Good insights, I dig this.

OT: Is anyone taking a part time degree here? Local/Private Uni? How are things gonna fair when you graduate? Can you fight jobs with pay like those who take full time NTU/NUS/SMU degrees? (I'm talking in relations to those night classes part time degree)

Am thinking if working after NS + taking night classes is 'worth the trouble'. You know, getting a degree, coming out with a decent degree pay and yet do some music stuffs after work. Note: The question is about part-time degree. Thanks again in advance!

Regards,
Poolo

u must realise one thing. If ur parents r rich, u can live to ur dreams n study watever music u like. Stay at home n compose music until ur hair grows white.

If from the day u step into poly all expenses are under u, even ur parents wait for u to bring home food n money, then u rethink...

Somehow i still link back to my belief that music are for the rich. N somehow the rich gets richer.
