this is a video i found on youtube. it is Waltz in A by Carcassi. i quite like the tune, so here i am to ask a question. is it possible to do this on the acoustic guitar with a pick? cos this guy is using classical guitar with finger style.

do take note of the video from 0:29 to 0:38. thats the part idk whether or not an acoustic with pick can achieve. thanks in advance for the answers.

You might be able to adapt it to using a pick. But the problem is, you'll miss out on a lot of notes. The thing about fingerstyle is that it uses not a single pick, but several fingers, so you can actually play separate strings at the same time, or in quick succession. You're not as limited as if you were using a pick.

Which is why fingerstyle guitar tends to use fingers, it is less limited.

I advise you to be adept with fingerstyle. You don't have to use the pick all the time. :)

thanks eugene. i understand. but just to clarify one matter, is it true if i say that fingerstyle can produce music like that of the pick, but the pick cannot do the same for fingerstyle?

Brutha....

picking with a plectrum& fingers are different styles.

With fingers you can pick the same string in rapid successions more fluidly than with a pick unless you can pick faster.

You'll get different tones using a pick and fingers.

Listen to a standard classical composition& then listen to a standard picking with plectrum composition. Actually listen to Mark Knopfler, he's afinger/s man& then check out covers of his songs by other artistes.

Where to find them? Look online.

do you eat rice with a fork or a spoon?

woah dude... as stated, he just started picking up guitars. why go hard down on him? sarcasm does not answer his question. starters do get curious on what he/she is going to explore, so its not wrong for them to ask those simple questions. you may find it a stupid to ask that kind of question but again, he emphasize that he is new to this. it helps to answer him rather than giving him that "do you eat rice with a fork or a spoon?" there's chopsticks imo to used eating rice. so yeah, be a lil kinder to newbies.

no offence, just 2 cents of my opinion

Give the guy a break man. Don't have to be all Mr-know-it-all here. Everyone's here to learn and give CONSTRUCTIVE comments and advice. Peace, no war ( ^.^ ) v

thanks morning :D thanks kim and eugene as well. i will do some research. im a lil confused cos im thinking of it like for example a game. if i be priest, should i go battle or full suport build? which one better? that kind of mentality, so idk whether i should stick to finger/s from the start or pick. yeah.

Learn the techniques relevant to the songs that you wanna play/listen to. That way you have a good incentive to master the said technique(s). I have a lot respect for finger style players but I focus more on using a pick because it is more in line with what I listen to.

this pc is relatively simple...

infact, at most he only pick 2 notes simultaneously....so using a pick for this pc is not problem....

if you need to pick 2 notes ....just hit one note with the pick, the other with your index, middle or ring..see whatever is comfortable with you...no rules..as long as u can produce good music...hehe..

Of course you can do it on acoustic guitar, and pick. However you have to consider the tone, and the ease of playing. It has its reason to be played on classical guitar, the mellow, round tone; it just sounds better in classical guitar. This varies between people, maybe some will think its better on acoustic.

Another point is that if you are playing using pick, you are limiting yourself to few notes, and the notes are adjacent. You can't play 2 notes that are far apart, except you are doing hybrid picking. And using pick produces different tone too, as stated by kimura. So it all comes down to you, you can play with pick, if you can get over all the limitations.

But my suggestion would be try to practice using fingers. It may look hard, but when you get used to it your finger actually move themselves. You will be more versatile when you know how to handle pick, and using finger. No harm learning another technique right?

Subjective is the magic word. Many people prefer classical guitars for fingerstyle, and steel-string acoustic guitars for other stuff. That is why generally they are seen as suitable for those applications.

But you look at it, both have six strings and are tuned the same or similar. So you can definitely do the same with both. The points to note are:
1. A classical guitar's neck is a lot wider.
2. A classical guitar's string spacing is a lot wider to facilitate easier and smoother fingerstyle playing.
3. A classical guitar sounds a lot mellower (and muddier when strummed) because it uses nylon for the bottom three strings rather than steel alloy.

It's really a subjective thing, it depends which type you prefer, and whether you prefer to use one type for everything or different types for different applications.

I personally use a steel-string for everything because I'm a make-do-with-what-I-have kind of person. Can't have too many guitars, and if one can do it all, I just stick to that one type the whole way through. :)

well if it helps you could invest in one of those thumb picks, looks like a ring with a tiny little pick on it. helps to give a little more attack to your bass notes. just my 2 cents :D
