buying used gear/instruments

hey got a question

do you guys buy used and unwanted instruments (like guitar) and gear from other musicians even though its in working condition?

or would you buy a brand new one?

i can't remember the last time i brought something significant that is new.

although i'm thinking of getting something that's significant, new and from outside of this sunny island soon.

depends. if its something i really really really want and would particularly treasure and use it forever, then new. other then that, used for the win!

its the condition tt matters..so long as its in good condition and a good price..take it~

Yeah, I sold keiith my guitar tuner & strap. Talking of which, *ahem* when are we meeting again? *ahem ahem*

hmmm but personally im not really comfortable with other peoples gear or instruments even if they are in working condition..

sensitive towards them...

well everyone would have their own preference in this. but yea, most of the time i look for 2nd hand goods for what i need, as long as the conditoin is good, nothing faulty and the price is reasonable, then im perfectly fine with it. ofcourse some things cant buy used, for example, strings. :D

for guitar, i find it better to buy used. coz i believe tone of the guitar sounds better as it age.

as for amps and other electronic. new would be good. but really no hard in used ones if you test and it's working.

i am a freak for used stuff.

For stuff that's related very much to circuits/chips like synths and mixers, I try to get first hand, unless its a synth that's out of production and I really want it badly.

I swear by used items. They look, feel and sound better to me.

They have gone places, and seen much action, and have passed through many hands. They just have more soul and character to me.

And yes, aged wood does sound better to me. I'm also not so afraid to play used instruments hard, like they were meant to be played.

True, true. I like secondhand instruments too.
My friend was just telling me about how his violin would sound better as one plays on it more. Something like the vibration permeating through the wood, thus enhancing the tone.
I would guess that this theory applies to guitars too, except maybe to a smaller extent.
So, yes! Secondhand stuff are good shit.

Hmm.. for guitars I wouldn't get 2nd hand, cos i kinda paranoid about hygeine...hahaha....I mean u dono wat the previous owner did with the instrutmennt...All the muck and dirt there just makes me feel queasy...no doubt it looks seasoned and cool...but i get paranoid abt it...all the microorganisms.....

Effects wise, i would get second hand cos wont have much contact with them except for twiddling the knobs and steppin on them..

second hand all the way.. in my whole rig, there's nothing that i've actually bought first hand. except strings.. and picks.. but the rest is all second hand.. all my effects, cables, guitars.. even straps!!! which has saved me a lot of money...

For effects and stuff, yea, I'd probably get them 2nd hand if I can't afford 1st hands. But for guitars, I'd definitely get them 1st hand...only if I really really have no means to get them new, then I'll reluctantly settle on a used one...

for me, i have no qualms about buying 2nd (or even 3rd hand) gear. in fact, i just picked up a 1980s ibanez SD-9. the paint is all off, its just left the bare metal case lol. but it sounds good, and i love it to death. same with the boss rv3 i got last year. imo, if something is good (and/or discontinued), grab! of course, it'll make more sense if u intend to use it =D

its second hand all the way for me. with the money that you save up buying second hand stuff, you can buy more second hand stuff  !

it doesnt matter who has used the 2nd hand item. if it sounds & functions just like a 1st hand item, why not? those items that you buy from the Swee Lee sales are considered ' 2nd hand ' too. I mean, just think how many people have tried out the guitar right? not to mention the fact that they have been hanging there for such a long time.

ohh. one thing is for sure, rare gears are definitely not first hand :). well, I could be wrong *shrugs*.

i dunno man... i always have this weird phobia that the seller would swap out the parts for lower quality stuff and then do the deal...

heck but that's just me

Well, I don't particularly like getting my hands all grubby just from playing an old guitar, but I'll still get a guitar if it sounds good.

I'll then bring it back home and clean the whole thing up. I don't know if anybody else feels this way, but I like the feeling when I manage to restore an old guitar, through DIY cleaning, and then setting it up to play....

When it finally is up and running, you really get attached to the guitar through all the hard work you put into "reviving" it. You just feel more and more for it as you play it more and fix it up more as time goes by.

2nd, 3rd, 4th hand...etc ...the older the guitar the better....provided it's in workin condition or repairable.... esp frets .... these older guitar seem to sound & play better a.k.a "seasoned"... 99% of my gear all 2nd hand

Beware 2nd hand pick ups - usually lacking in power though not always the case...

I believe gear "comestic" condition is just that - only "skin deep" and wat counts is its "chi"....

my 2 cents... 8)
