Buying custom bass help!

Buy 2nd hand on soft!

Anyway I'm working on the finish of a raw bass he made for my friend. I'll post soundclips when it's done I suppose. But so far I feel that the balance is good and the neck feels okay. One string doesn't land exactly over the pickup pole though.

which string? is it the G or E/low B string?

one of the consequences of the string not being directly over the pole is that the distance between the string and the pole is greater, causing it to sound softer. if this is a problem you can compensate by raising that side of the pickup.

do check if the height of the middle pole pieces compensate for the radiused fretboard, if it is.

I spoke to that guy, he said he gets everything cheap from a Korean factory and his woods are local woods, apparently, which is why it can be so cheap. The bad part is he doesn't have a lot of different woods. I asked for a Koa Veneer with a rosewood body and Anderson pickups, so bassy sounds with nice crisp highs. (It's a tele). He didn't have everything i asked for.

Yep, it is... Well, i wouldn't know now. Hahah, but i'm sure it'll be pretty similar, maybe more dynamic compared to Mahogany.
Anyway, i'm with the notion beginners shouldn't order custom instrument. No offence, but TS didn't know the term hardware?

Hehe, not Bass. An electric guitar. But you know, sama sama. :p
He didn't have the materials. If get custom, why hold back? Custom is for quality and workmanship you can't get with production. Thats why there's a premium for it... No point getting a crap custom imho. Even lower resale value. :x

I think this is a common misconception that custom always means better workmanship. Workmanship level doesn't matter if its a one off custom or regular production model. I've seen shabby quality customs and real top of line quality in "production" instruments.

True, but then, those with poor workmanship often don't last.
Which is why boutique makers are careful with detail. People like Suhr, Anderson, Melancon, i've never seen reports on poor quality material or shoddy workmanship.
Custom is simply different i guess. You get exactly what you want. Unlike production, where you may want a mishmash of different specs but a single guitar can't provide it.

I know this is really late, but finally, the bass that I picked up from him has soundclips. I didn't do any substantial work on it, just did a finish and setup, replaced strings with GHS Boomers, and swapped the pots to the cheap push-pulls you can get from ranking so that the pots can be coiltapped. Since everything else is pretty much stock as what I got from him and the finish probably doesn't make that much diff to the sound, this should be an okay reference.

When delivered, it was like this-

Bare wood with binding. Interestingly it seems to be a wooden nut.

I did this finish over it-

Plugged direct into H4n without any amp emulation, played in the dark at 11pm next to a condo swimming pool at my friend's house (LOL) so pardon the poor playing.

First set of clips is a "sound check", played with neck soloed, neck + bridge, bridge soloed. For each setting, it is first played as humbucker, then as coil tapped, and for each "coil tap setting" first with fingers over neck pickup, then fingers over bridge pickup. LOL I know this is confusing.

Then soundclips of riffs were, first, bridge soloed and coil-tapped, then neck soloed and humbucking, then both mixed and humbucking.

As for playability, the string spacing is really narrow but that's because of the bridge. Identical to the '95 non-reverse epi T-Bird I have, since they're the same bridge model I think. So, very NOT ideal for slap but it works out pretty nicely for rock I guess. Since my friend is short and has small fingers this should work out well :P

The neck feels easy to play both before and after painting the back. I did a satin finish since gloss sometimes seems to stick to my fingers a bit. Balance is good, it's a little heavy but that's to be expected since it's maple top over maho, and I had a pretty heavy finish too.

Overall I'm quite satisfied with what I got from him and the price. However, I've heard two other current customers have been waiting really long. I know my own bass body took pretty long to arrive since he accidentally forgot to rout out something and had to start over, but he gave me two bodies (I'm thinking what to do with the other one now lol) without extra charge. This one was pretty fast though.

If you've anything else to ask me about this just shoot!

hey... i like the bass sound^_^ but i'm just wonderin... how come your bass has that weird uneven look??? did you purposely do that or was that on purpose? haha and how much does yours cost???
