hello, im looking to buy a new acoustic guitar, ich wanna know

-how you guys test guitars
-what are some of the things to look out for when buying

differnt people got different preference. I like acoustic guitars with a mellow sound but at the same time, the tone rings...

Here's a list of offhand questions which may help:

Before your purchase, determine your
1. Budget
2. Folk or classical
3. Type of tone you're looking for
4. Full body or a single cutaway for easier access to high notes
5. Whether you want to plug it into an acoustic amp
6. Research on the various brands

During purchase,
1. Bring a knowledgeable friend along
2. Choose a time to test out when the shop is quiet so you can hear what you're playing
3. Don't be afraid to try out the high end guitars so you get a gauge and feel of the difference in high vs. mid vs. low end stuff
4. Usually you have to purchase your own case but can try bargaining it in as a freebie
5. Shop around as much as you can. Don't make the purchase on the same day, sleep on it and if a particular guitar still haunts you in your dreams then that's the right one.

For folk guitars, I for one recommend the brands of Yamaha and Cort as excellent value for money.

When testing acoustic guitars, I take important note of the action, playability (different sizes of necks available), workmanship, loudness and tone. Just play something familiar, pick a few notes and strum a few chords and see how much you like it 8)

hi thanks for ur replies

what do u guys think of takamine?

also, what do u call those acoustic guitars which have thinner bodies?

Hmm.

I once tried a china-made takamine, and I could hear the potential for it when it seasons well.

However, depending on your budget, try a maestro, perhaps?

A maestro guitar will be good for starters. I've a maestro guitar which I bought from Penisula. But I saving up to get a Epiphone Les Paul Custom guitar. I can sell you my maestro guitar. I bought it two months ago but it's still in tip top condition. the model number is SD 1

hello guys,

hitch on this thread a bit caurse i am buying an acosutic gutiar too

Budget: 250
cut off: yes
eq pick up:yes
size: i prefer the smaller type of guitar, not those huge dreadnaught
body: not too thick
Sound: More to the steel type of sound

any recmendations? was thinking of a ovation... but I am open for suggestions = )

then the only solution i can offer you is out of your budget. the yamaha APX series.

it sounds good for its size.

thats if you dont want a dreadnaught.
imo, not many guitars smaller than a dreadnaught can produce a nice thick sound.

but since youre going for steel type, perhaps you can emphasize more of what steel type means? im not quite getting you

Hmm I know there's those type of guitars with a black composite back which are physically quite thin, offers a piezo and eq and doesn't sound too shabby. Can't rmb the brand though.

electro-acoustics? those arent that bad. but i'd really really really say dreadnaught. imo, its the most full sounding one.

people have their own tastes. but thats mine. :D

may i know whats a piezo?

my steel sounds means, when light struming, can hear the metalic 'zing zing'.. dunno if its more understandable like that...

budget can be raised to like 300 to 350

oh ya action prefably low.. can play 12 to 15 frets region with not too much of difficulty XD

i will check out the yamaha apx =) thanks

Some of the suggestions that have been made are good !

Yamaha APX rocks! :D

Take a knowledgeable friend along, ask him to try some ovation guitars for you as well. They are decent. I think city music retails them.

just checked out the APX on the net.. seems really good to me!

Anyone knows what are the prices ranges? they have the APX500, APX70 and APX900
