Hi bros and sis here at soft.

I have decided to get a pedal with distortion function. So in other words, I am getting distortion.

However due to a budget of 100 bucks. I have to come down to 2 pedals.

1. Boss DS-1

Most of you might have heard of this pedal from Boss. And i've actually been eyeing this pedal for quite some time now.

2. Beta Alvin HM-100

Suggested by a friend of mine who mentioned that it has better distortion sound and setting compared to Boss DS-1

Bro and sis, please help me decide via the poll provided and your point of view please. Thanks!!

ok edit here: I am somewhat like The Fray and Paramore that sort. Hope that helps. Coz i dunno how to describe how i play and stuff.

perharps you shd provide more infor as to what gene of music you play, tones you are looking for..before softies can advise. ones liking might not be suitable for others. maybe other recommandations other than this 2 pedals.

though end of the day, trying out is a must for you yourself. :)

First of all, they're very different pedals.

The Boss DS-1 is a medium-gain distortion, so it's more towards blues, rock, etc.

The Beta Aivin HM-100 is a high-gain distortion, so it's more towards heavy metal, nu-metal, alt-metal, etc.

Since you play Paramore and The Fray, I'd suggest the Boss DS-1. The Beta Aivin HM-100 will have way more distortion than you'll need.

^agree with eugene, since you're dont need THAT much gain, the ds-1 would be a better choice, but for $100 you definitely can some other stuff in the buy/sell forum here, so don't limit yourself to these choices, and yes always try!

what amp are you using? these pedals are good but sometimes if you have a small amp like maybe a Marshall MS-2, pedals just don't shine as they should.

Agree. Small amp, big amp, huge difference. Bigger amps have a bigger sound because of the larger speakers. The most ballsy combo amp I've ever heard (even the cleans had balls) had 4 12" speakers. Insanity...

Thanks bro Eugene for the view.

However i will test both of them still. But nevertheless I value your view bro.

btw i'm using a Sound Drive SG-15, 15 watts.

Do you plan to use the pedal to boost the dirt channel on the SD amp or to play it through the clean channel? That can be a consideration as well. Either way, i'd probably go with the DS-1, the HM-100 is a hot and heavy pedal, might be too heavy for you.

play it thru the clean channel, there is no way i am gonna play an effects pedal thru a effect channel. It will be disastrous.

there nothing disastrous actually. Its just connection of input to output input etc.

Infact, theres what some folks with bigger amp do... to push the the gain level into saturation, with a pedal into the gain channel of amp. Its a matter of preference and knowing how to achieve what they wanna.

Hahaha. Hmmmm maybe you really should get the DS-1. Then switch to the dirt channel, put the gain at level 3, switch on the DS-1 at medium gain and rock on. You'll be surprised at the number of ways you can experiment with this.
