Best venue to hear original music

Hi all,

I'm new to these parts and I'm keen to see some local bands, but pretty much every live music venue I can find seems to feature cover bands.

Where (if anywhere) can I go to see local bands playing their own music? Ideally indie, dream pop, punk, americana, electro or soul, but I'm curious about pretty much anything.
