I always reconmend a Squier Strat California Series as a pretty decent starter guitar.
Firstly, because its Squier, which is owned by Fender. That gives you assurance that the guitar you're buying is of relatively good, if not decent quality, for the money that you're paying.
Fender doesn't hide the fact that Squier produces cheaper versions of its more expensive Fenders. You can find a reference on the guitar itself. If its of bad quality, Fender has much to lose
Secondly, its relatively cheap. Its is about $300, although many shops will sell it for $280
Thirdly, its relatively versatile, but only the CALIFORNIA SERIES. It has two single-coils and a humbucker at the bridge. I use my own Squier to play everything to Muse, Radiohead, Anberlin and Avenged Sevenfold (to name a few) and with a little bit of tweaking of guitar and amp settings, I can easily achieve the sound I want.
Anyway, amp wise its adviceable to get a Roland Cube. The Cube has its own effects. It may not give you a lot of freedom in varying your effects, but for a beginner it is relatively good enough already.
My two cents
