Hey I'm a beginner dying to learn the electric guitar.
I've looked at Swee Lee's online store and have been to their shop and Sims drive. I fancy the Les Paul II, but the salesman gave me recommendations on what to buy.
I was close to buying a Les Paul II Special Package, but he said i shouldn't because the amp wasn't worth it.
My budget is around $600, but i can afford anything just a little bit higher, cause i will be splitting the price with my parents.

I just need to know a few things:

1. Is it good to buy a package, as i have seen reviews of such packages and they don't seem that great.

2. Should i buy the guitar, amp, and other accessories separately. The salesman said he would give me a good price if i did that, around $600.

3. Oh, and i would also like to know, the average package, how long does it usually last? As in, how long can i rely on the guitar/amp.

Any other advice for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers! :D

i don't think so. should be made in china.

my advise is not to splurge all your available $600. save some money because down the road you may want to get effects.

Oh MIC...
My friend says craftsman ain't as good as epiphone.
Well, i think I'll go back to Swee Lee tomorrow, try out a few guitars.
Waiting for the year end sale. if any..

Any other recommendations?

hmm.. guitars guitars.. T_T sorry some stupid thought running through my mind. anyway. hmm. my point of view on packages are that they aren't great in a long run as u'll eventually find that u need to upgrade as u move along the music line, yes i know all music players have to upgrade but if you buy this starter pack you're gonna upgrade EVERYTHING as the amp the guitar the everything in that pack is just for beginners. but that's imo and if you're serious about learning guitar.

hmm u can always try looking at other cheaper brands first rather than getting straight to epiphones and so on. as you may never know that you won't like guitar or what.
try davis they can offer u a lower end but still affordable and decently good enough to last you abit before upgrading.
note. always get a guitar that u feel is good as in sound and feel wise.

but yea.. the starter pack mentioned by van_halen seems good la. btw year end sale. most prob gone to MFOs only.

where's the epiphone les paul special 2 made in?

as for the subject of craftsman vs epiphone, i suggest you try out the craftsman les pauls first. i don't see how the craftsman les pauls are inferior to bolt on epiphone les pauls. set neck epiphone les pauls are another matter but that's not what you are looking for since you are gunning for the epiphone les paul special 2.

the main reason why i recommend the citymusic package is because of the amp. for practice purpose, it's useful for all levels really so even as you progress to the next level you still can keep it for bedroom practice unlike other beginner grade amps which are really toneless and uninspiring to play. it's a digital modelling amp from the masters of digital modelling (line6). you get good tone. for the price it's really amazing. go check out demos from youtube.

Yea, i know i'll have to upgrade.
Oh, i forgot to mention, I'm into the metal and hard rock and punk genre. Around there.

And about getting something cheaper. I can get an epiphone, the money is all there. Down the road, when i need to upgrade amp/guitar or get new stuff like pedals(which i have no idea what are for btw.. o.o) I should have the money. All i need is the guitar that will last me about a year and a half or two.
My dad's the kind that will buy anything so long as he knows the money is going somewhere it is needed and will be put to good use. Sooo..
But if the craftsman is really that good as you say, i will consider..

Oh and the les paul is made in Indonesia.

u have 600bucks for an amp and a guitar.

i suggest u really look at the buy/sell section on soft. u will save much more money if u do not mind used stuff.

600 is a pretty solid amount for starting. u could consider the epiphone les paul special. i personally have something against epiphone cos they're stock pickups always sound muddy to me. i suggest u keep ur options open.

take ur time and try the guitars for urself and see which one feels best in ur hands. heh. this is really important ah. its to prevent impulsive buys and regretting in the future.

as for amp, u should consider the vox pathfinder series at city music, or the roland cube which can be found in swee lee.

Haha the guy said that the roland cube was at 40%off, about 245 bucks total after discount. Hehe.
I'm aware about the regretting part. My brother bought a Yamah acoustinc guitar. So did my other brother. one of em's regretting that he should have bought electric.
Well, i'm taking my time with this.

dont get such an expensive cube lah! haha get the cube 15X that ones much cheaper.

yeah u should take ur time.try to get someone who know electric guitar well to go along with u during ur trips to the shops.

600 bucks budget? buy 2nd hand epiphone les paul standard and 15 watt marshall amps...will last u for years before upgrade

I recommend Yamaha Pacifica. Around 450 bucks, you can get a decent guitar ready to last you for ages. For an amp, I suggest getting a Roland Cube. It has ample effects and is good for any guitarist.

But what about the other stuff like bag, straps, tuner, etc.
Within the 500 - 600 i need all that stuff in it.
Sorry for all the late add ons.
=/

gigbags should come with the purchase. the rest can be obtained with little cash. i didnt even use a tuner when i first started off. i just googled "online tuner"

Lol online tuner?
Didnt know those existed...

ohhhhhhh haizzz.
My TWO brothers have a tuner each, exactly the same.. How stupid of me..

haha. good that u have 2 bros that play guitars. (omg kinda reminds me of jonas bros) lol T_T senseless thinking there. sorry. anyway. yea. straps can be bought at 15 bucks picks are 2 bucks tuner best that you train your ears. cause eventually u can use your ears to catch song chords rather than search up the tab. it'll increase your knowledge of guitar if you did it that way. hmm yea online tuners have 2 types. 1 is follow by sound. the other uses microphone and the thing calibrate the frequency of the sound wave giving you standard tuning. but its always off T_T so useless. imo ear tuning is always better.
