Bassists....i need help!!!!

Hi fellow bassists....

About 4 months ago i started learning and playing the 4 stringer bass. I learnt how to read notes and maintaining ryhthm with the guitarist and the drummer. But someone told me that i must ALSO learn root notes and bass scales in order to be a versatile bassist, as well as all the cool bass slapping.

What exactly are root notes? Are they what i am playing now? Why must i learn bass scales even though there are just 4 strings? And how exactly do I "slap" a bass?
